Why using a VPN and Tor at the same time is a bad combination

Sometimes we need to hide the IP address and browse anonymously. For example to avoid geographical blocks or simply to improve privacy on the network. To achieve this we can use different services, such as a VPN or Tor Browser. Now, is it a good idea to combine both? In this article we are going to explain why it would be an error and how it will affect your connection.

Using VPN and Tor is not a good idea

When you browse through a VPN, the speed of the Internet will decrease. This will cause certain services that you are used to using, such as watching streaming videos or downloading files, to have problems and not work properly. However, this will also depend on the type of program you use, since free VPNs generally do worse.

But the same thing happens when using the Tor browser. We can even say that the speed is even more limited and it becomes really difficult to use platforms or services that require good bandwidth. For example, you would see that Netflix or YouTube videos are cut off or that Internet downloads are very slow.

Therefore, if you combine a VPN and Tor You will see that the connection will go very bad. You are going to have significant problems to navigate, to do anything you do in your day to day and that may require an acceptable speed. You will see that cuts and even failures appear to be able to enter some pages.

What a VPN does is encrypt your connection. Everything you send and receive will go through an intermediary first, a server that will redirect the connection and is what will allow you to hide your IP address, for example. The proxy browser works through nodes. It basically means that the connection is going to go through multiple intermediaries until it reaches the final destination.

Avoid conflicts when using VPN

Is it necessary for security?

You may be wondering if it is a good thing to use Tor and a VPN for security. At the end of the day, you would be combining two services that are going to be in charge of encrypting the connection and, ultimately, improve your privacy when you connect to the Internet.

But really this there’s no need. It is not if your goal is simply to hide personal information, such as your IP or location. A VPN that works well, that is guaranteed, will act correctly and it would not be necessary to use the Tor browser or use a proxy that also acts as an intermediary.

Therefore, our advice is that choose very well which VPN to use and do not take into account the possibility of using it together with Tor Browser. You can see that there are differences between Tor and VPN. Although in both cases you can hide your identity, they are not really the same.

You should also know that they could create conflicts between programs. This can cause not only the connection to malfunction, but it may even make it impossible for you to connect to the network. You would not have a connection and you would have to do without one of the two options to navigate without problems.
