Will Touch ID come back to iPhones?

One of the safest unlocking methods that currently exist on a smartphone is Apple’s Touch ID, however, the tendency of the Cupertino company to go towards eliminating it on all its devices, not just the iPhone. But could Apple go back and bring back fingerprint as an alternative method to Face ID? We tell you about it in this post.

The fingerprint sensor has been accompanying the iPhone since on September 20, 2013which was the date on which Apple presented the first model that had Touch ID, the Iphone 5s. Over the years and the iPhone generations, this unlocking method has been perfected, becoming faster, more efficient and, above all, safer.

In fact, its implementation was so successful that later on the Cupertino company itself decided that it would also be present in other devices such as the iPadand even the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or iMacs, with the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. However, the need to carry out an all-screen device meant that with the arrival of the iPhone X Touch ID will give way to Face ID, the facial unlocking method.

Since then, all iPhone models, except the SE, have opted for Face ID instead of Touch ID, simply for a design issue, since on an all-screen device you cannot insert a button on the front that houses this fingerprint sensor. The same thing happened with the iPad, specifically with the Pro range, which since 2018 said goodbye to Touch ID to welcome Face ID with open arms.

Touch ID could return to iPhones

Speaking of the iPad, this is the main hope users have for this unlocking method to return to the iPhone. The iPad Air 4 It was the first Apple device that, having an all-screen design, kept Touch ID as an unlocking method, since the Cupertino company managed to insert it into the on and off button.

Given this move, users’ illusion was reawakened that Apple was capable of combine both unlock methods on iPhone, entering the Touch ID on the unlock button. However, there are also other rumors that Apple could be working to introduce fingerprint recognition through the device’s own screen, something that other manufacturers have managed to do.

Obviously, the hypothetical return of Touch ID to the iPhone would in no case mean saying goodbye to Face ID, since it is more comfortable to use in most situations. The ideal thing for all users would be to be able to count on both unlocking methods so that they could be used interchangeably depending on the moment and the situation, since in some cases it is more comfortable to use facial recognition, while in others, to use fingerprint recognition can become more productive and easy.
