Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass, a great leap into augmented reality

The Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass have been one of the most interesting surprises of what we have so far from MWC 2023, and that so far is being a most successful edition. And I say that it has been one of the most interesting announcements because although it is always interesting to know about the renovations of devices that we already know, it is undeniable that the presentation of concepts and prototypes is always especially attractive, since it opens the doors of research laboratories for us. of technology and reveals his vision of the future.

Such is the case with these Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass Discovery Edition, well that is its full name, and for now they are just that, a proof of concept that, therefore, will not reach the market in a general way, but it does tell us what Xiaomi is working on in this regard, and what we can expect from this type of device in the medium term. And what we can see is probably one of the most promising proposals seen so far in terms of augmented reality.

The first relevant novelty can already be found in his name, and that is that we are talking about a wireless viewer that, therefore, it will not be limited to the immediate vicinity of the PC for its use. Instead it connects with the Xiaomi 13 or other devices compatible with Snapdragon Spaces. This is because they rely on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 technology for connectivity. Thanks to the use of it offer wireless latency as low as 3 milliseconds and a full link latency of just 50 milliseconds.

However, the strong point of these Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass is found in their screens, which according to the company are “Retina” level, for which Xiaomi has chosen to mount two separate Micro OLED panels with a brightness of up to 1,200 nits with electrochromic technology, which allows you to dynamically adjust the level of transparency in order to provide greater external visibility when we are interacting with external elements and a more isolated experience when we want to view content of any kind.

Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass, a great leap into augmented reality

A key aspect to provide an augmented reality experience is that we are not able to visually distinguish the real elements from those generated by the viewer, something in which it is necessary to achieve an angular resolution of 60 pixels per degree (PPD, Pixels Per degree). So far there are no devices that reach this sweet spot, but according to the company, the Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass is very close. with an angular resolution of 58 pixels per degree.

Design is also a very important element, since we are talking about a type of wearable that aims to be of continuous use. To make this possible, Xiaomi has opted for light and resistant materials, creating a magnesium and lithium alloy structure that is completed with some parts made of carbon fiber. Thanks to their choice, despite their size, the Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass weigh only 126 grams, including its siloxygen anode battery.

Xiaomi has also wanted to focus, and rightly so, on its control system, which is at least as futuristic as the viewfinder design itself. The cameras integrated in it are capable of identifying the phalanges of the user’s hand, so that he can use his hand, through gestures, to control the actions of the device. So yes, as we have seen so many times in science fiction, we can control the device simply with hand movements (obviously without touching it, the other has been around for decades).
