Spanish scenarios of The House of the Dragon
Together with other countries like Croatia, Ireland or Malta, Spain was one of the main ones where HBO originally decided to film its successful series Game of Thrones, tradition that has continued with The House of the Dragonthanks to all those landscapes and cities that cover our geography and that exude that smell of history and the Middle Ages of centuries in which many of those same palace conspiracies and succession wars took place as in the universe of George RR Martin.
Next we are going to present five real scenarios in Spain that have appeared in The House of the Dragon and that you can go visit right now. Without further ado, let’s get this list started.
Caceres
In essence, it is the main set where the prequel has been recorded. This Extremaduran city gives life to King’s Landing and the historic center of was used to simulate the capital of the entire kingdom of Poniente. Shooting was one of the biggest challenges that the production had to face, since unlike most places they usually go, it is a big city with shops and people living and going to work daily.
Trujillo (Caceres)
This other town located a few kilometers from Cáceres, and birthplace of Francisco Pizarro, It was also used as King’s Landing. However, it was reserved for a very specific part of George RR Martin’s fiction, such as the main square of the capital of Poniente, where the Iron Throne rests. An odyssey that forced the closure of its old town for two weeks.
The Calahorra (Granada)
This small castle located in a small town in the province of Granada was chosen to shoot the scenes of Laena Velaryon, Daemon Targaryen and their daughters during the sixth chapter of the series. As HBO Max discovers in the video published on its official channel, it was chosen especially for its color palette, very similar to that of the orography that it wanted to show.
Lloret de Mar (Girona)
The Santa Clotilde Gardens in Girona were the selected to record the scenes between King Viserys and the Velaryons during the second episode of the season. One of the aspects that most caught the attention of the production team was its proximity to the sea, as well as the different levels that the garden itself has.
Extra: Monsanto (Portugal)
Although we know that we are cheating a bit, since it is less than 30 kilometers from the border, this location “practically” is in Spain. Although at the moment we do not know which city it will represent, what we are sure of is that it will be very important in the future of the series, specifically in the seventh episode.
And you? Do you want to visit any of these locations?
