AMD continues to gain market share in server CPUs

Counterpoint Analysis has shared very interesting data that allows us to see the evolution experienced by the server CPU market share in 2022a year that was difficult in its final stage, but that, as we can see, had AMD as one of the big winners in that market, since its total share experienced very significant growth.

If we look at the attached image, which represents the market share by amount of revenue In the server CPU sector, we will see that Intel went from 80.71% in 2021 to 70.77% in 2022. This leaves us with a drop of almost 10% in revenue, a figure that without There is no doubt that it is very negative, and that it has been motivated by AMD’s push, although we also have surprises if we look at the results of AWS (Amazon Web Services) and Ampere.

We start with AMD, and we see that those of Sunnyvale went from 11.74% to 19.84%a figure that confirms the good work that the company is doing with its EPYC processors, a generation that has recently made the leap to the Zen 4 architecture, and that has achieved a huge improvement in both core density and single-thread performance, and the best thing is that it has not had to give up remarkable efficiency to achieve it.

AMD CPU market share

However, AMD was not the only one that grew. In the same graph we can see that AWS processors went from a share of 1.82% to 3.16%, a discreet but considerable increase, and those of Ampere went from having a practically zero presence to rising to 1.52%. Taking into account how complicated this sector is, and how demanding and competitive it is, we cannot do anything other than recognize the merit of both companies in their attempt to “squeeze” the two giants in the sector, Intel and AMD.

Intel continues to comfortably lead the server CPU market, and seeing the difference that exists between it and AMD at the level of revenue in said market, it is clear that the situation is not going to change in the short or medium term, but if the trend continues holds we may end up seeing a monumental shift in favor of the latter. Remember that, Until about five years ago, AMD’s presence in this market was very low, and now it is close to 20%.
