AMD is going to launch the graphics card with the most consumption in the world: 750W

It seems that the competition between AMD and NVIDIA continues, and it is that even in energy consumption they fight, well, until now the NVIDIA H100 GPU was the graphics card with the most consumption on the market, close to 700W, however, AMD has just present another that will reach 750W, a real madness.

It thus becomes the component with the highest consumption in history. A not insignificant figure that must be taken into account, due to many factors, when thinking about acquiring it.

AMD Instinct MI300X

That is its name and it comes to surpass its predecessor, the MI250X, whose power consumption was not negligible at all, reaching about 560W, however, this new AMD graphics card would reach 750W, a difference of almost 200W with the previous one. In some cases a complete computer does not even consume what separates them only from each other.

The chip includes HBM3 memory with 192 GB capacities. That’s 50% more than the 128 GB HBM2e memory used by the previous MI250X.

The brand has omitted it in its presentation since they focused on talking about the performance it will have, being far superior to the rest of the cards and in conclusion having to consume more, but it is a fact that they were obviously not interested in saying for various reasons.

If we are thinking of acquiring a graphics card of this power, we will not only have to spend good money on it, but we will also need a power supply that supports the sum of all the energy that our computer consumes.

In addition, the energy cost reflected in our electricity bill can be quite high, considering that the rest of the components do not exceed 250W (something quite complicated since if we have a GPU of that power, the PC should be accordingly), we would consume 1kW /h. Using this computer for several hours a day could be a bit expensive.

AMD highlights the ability to run extremely large language models, with up to 80 billion parameters, on your processor. This makes it a very interesting option for applications like ChatGPT, where high performance and processing power are required.

For now we do not know much more, neither price, nor release date or anything, but we are impatient to see it and observe how it behaves in operation, since such a power also needs appropriate cooling. We do not know how it will heat up and the need to adapt the computer to it or not. It is something that we have not seen before and that can condition the future of PCs.

We will be attentive to future news from AMD and eagerly awaiting its launch on the market, which is expected for this 2024. It is a great step for the future of technology, and I do not think that the electric companies are upset with this announcement, to be honest. We are getting closer and closer to the consumption of a single component reaching KW. As everyone follows this step, they are going to have to take out solar panels to power a simple PC.
