AMD presents (live) its new and powerful graphics cards

After a long wait, accelerated by the recent launch of the NVIDIA RTX 4090, finally AMD introduces the first models of the RX 7000 graphics cardsbased on the RDNA3 architecture and being the first disaggregated GPU in PC history, which are colloquially known as chiplets. Join us as we reveal all the details of the new generation of Radeon brand gaming GPUs, both the first models and the details that surround them.

Through the event entitled Together We Advance Gaming, AMD will host an internet broadcast where it will show the first details of its new generation of graphics cards. Contrary to what Lisa Su’s company has us used to, there has not been the level of leaks that other times. In the sense that before the presentation and despite the fact that we have known some details of the new GPU for months, at the moment we do not know models, clock speeds, price and relative performance. That is, we know some of the technical details, but we are completely unaware of what is really important to the end user.

AMD introduces the first RX 7000 graphics cards

One of the biggest problems when scaling a chip to more advanced nodes is that not all parts scale in the same way or do not benefit from it. With the increase in chip manufacturing costs is when the disaggregated processor concept appears, which consists of dividing a single chip into several smaller ones, but built in different foundries in order to reduce costs.

This strategy was already carried out by AMD with its Ryzen processors from the 3000 range based on Zen 2, but it was impossible to do it in the Radeon GPUs due to the need for interfaces to communicate with high bandwidth chiplets. It is thanks to TSMC’s latest packaging advances that this has been made possible, however, the RX 7000 graphics cards are much more than just separating the functions of a graphics chip into several different parts.

live presentation

Lisa Su has appeared on stage to start the presentation of the new AMD RX 7000 based on RDNA 3 architecture, the presentation is focused on gaming hardware. A little jab at NVIDIA that has been focused on Artificial Intelligence for a long time. In addition, the AMD CEO is bragging about the number of platforms that have adopted the company’s technologies.

The new generation of AMD Radeons are based on the RDNA 3 architecture, where AMD has focused especially on improving performance per watt. We already knew that they had discarded the new 16-pin power connector to continue with the classic connectors. So for them it is important to increase that aspect compared to the previous generation, a total of 54%.

This is AMD’s most powerful GPU so far.

Rumors about the graphics chip, or GPU, Navi 31 are confirmed:

  • 1 GCD where the entire graphics chip is located, except for the memory controller and the Infinity Cache, manufactured at 5nm in the TSMC foundries. Its size is 300 mm².
  • 6 MCD where the remaining parts are found in the GCD, manufactured at 6 nm from TSMC. Each of them measures 37 mm².

And the models that we are going to see are:

  • AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX
    • 24GB GDDR6
    • 355W TDP
    • Your Game Clock is 2.3 GHz
    • 96 Compute Units
  • AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT
    • 20GB GDDR6
    • 300W TDP
    • Its Game Clock is 2 GHz.
    • 84 Compute Units

As for the new technologies included in the new GPU, the important thing is the new Unified Compute Units. This is the most important change and honestly AMD has surprised us with the addition of units for acceleration for AI, which we did not expect, apart from including twice as many floating point units as in the RX 6000. Which we did expect.

AMD has also improved its display driver, which now supports DisplayPort 2.1 with a bandwidth of 53 Gbps, being the first graphics card to support it. Not to forget the new Dual Media Engine with thethe ability to encode and decode AV1 in 8K at 60 FPS and have advanced capabilities through AI.

Another new feature is decoupled clock speed, where parts of the GPU run at a different speed than others.

AMD RX 7900 XT performance in games

What we are interested in about a gaming graphics card is its gaming performance, AMD has shown some data about the performance of different games at different resolutions and with and without Ray Tracing activated. From which we can get an idea of the performance of this graphics card, obviously, AMD has tested its graphics card on the best of its processors.

  • APEX Legends is capable of reaching 300 FPS at 1440P, at 4K it reaches 295 FPS
  • Overwatch 2 reaches 600 FPS in Quad HD, in the case of playing at 4K it can reach 355 FPS
  • 833 FPS for Valorant at 1440p and and in Ultra HD at 704 FPS.
  • Hitman 3 reaches 275 FPS, Modern Warfare 2 306 FPS, the latter with FSR 2.2 active.
