Android will integrate an auto-archiving function which will automate the uninstallation of the least often unused applications.
Google has announced on the developers’ blog that smartphones running Android 13 will benefit from a feature which, under an innocuous appearance, will radically make life easier for users. In their article, they first announce that users’ main motivation when uninstalling an app is to free up space. “Today, when users try to install a new app on a nearly full device, they see a dialog box that allows them to manually uninstall the app to make room.”

This operation actually frees up storage space, but it is sometimes a little radical. Indeed, it also erases the user’s data and backups. With SSDs usually only being able to store a maximum of one terabyte of data, smartphones are quickly reaching their limits, and sometimes cleaning is necessary. This task can be tedious; it was therefore time for Google engineers to look into the matter and automate this procedure.
Android will finally benefit from an application self-archiving feature
The function of offloading applications, that is to say to erase the bulk of an application while retaining personal data and backups, is already available on iOS. Archiving applications under Android will reduce the space used by an app by 60%, without completely erasing it. In a nutshell, then, it will archive the program and allow you to download it again and reuse it without having to configure anything. In effect, the application icon will remain visible on the screen.
The procedure to take advantage of this feature could not be simpler. Users have to install a new app on their smartphone when it runs out of storage space. A message will appear asking them if they want to enable the AutoArchive feature. If they accept unused apps will be automatically archived by the Play Store.
