They ask users, victims actually, to update the browser through a file they provide.
That file, disguised as a 7 Zip installer, is really going to distribute malware capable of stealing data. You will be able to connect to a server, controlled by the attacker, and send the data that they steal. This may mean that they obtain information from your system, programs you use, personal data…
However, this campaign is not unique; you could meet fake messages to update Chrome of different types and with a similar objective. It is key that you never click, since your personal data could be compromised and the proper functioning of your system could also be compromised.
Avoid problems
What can you do to avoid being a victim of this threat? It’s really very simple: never click on pop-up messages that appear when browsing, where they indicate that you should update Chrome, Windows or install an antivirus to avoid problems. It’s going to be a trap and you could be downloading malware.
Beyond that advice, it is important to have the always updated browser. Now, you must always install the latest version from official sources. You can go to the menu at the top right, click on Help and go to Google Chrome Information. It will automatically start checking for new versions and will tell you if it is updated or not.
It is also key protect your browser and system. On the one hand, avoid installing extensions that could be a threat. On the other hand, install a good antivirus that detects the entry of malware that could be dangerous. It is also advisable to have the system updated and thus be able to correct possible vulnerabilities.
