Canon Spain becomes the first printing company to offset its carbon footprint

Canon Spain has been recognized for its environmental work at a national level. He recently got the “Compensated” stamp – granted by the Spanish Office for Climate Change-, thus becoming the leading manufacturer in the printing industry in Spain to receive it. This seal recognizes the suitability of the forestry project “forest canon” that will absorb the CO2 emissions emitted by the company during a whole year of activity and will have a positive impact on biodiversity.

In order to offset its carbon footprint, Canon Spain has carried out a reforestation project -‘Bosque Canon’- located on Torimbia beach, in the council of Llanes (Asturias). A project that seeks to recover the vegetation in the area, positively impact diversity and absorb the 1,000 Tons of CO2 emitted by the organization as a result of its operations during the year 2021.

The Forest creates a protective forest mass using only native species such as birch (Betula celtiberica) and willow (Salix atrocinerea), which provides ecosystem services of carbon capture and storage, as well as an improvement in biodiversity. A total of 2,080 trees have been planted on the one-hectare plot where the reforestation was carried out, which will absorb some 1,077 tons of CO2 over the next 35 years. During this Canon period, through bosquia -partner specialized in this type of reforestation projects-, will carry out all the silvicultural actions that are necessary to guarantee the perpetuation of the forest mass.

decarbonization strategy

This project is part of the decarbonization strategy of the multinational that has already announced its commitment to reach Net-Zero status in the year 2050. The current lines of work are focused on eco-design, the rationalization of logistics operations, energy saving initiatives in production centers and the consolidation of businesses increasingly oriented towards the circular economy, which implies a lower carbon footprint associated with the use of its products.

Landing this strategy in Spain, the organization has established reduction objectives linked to its operations, which has allowed it to gradually reduce its carbon footprint. Proof of this is that Canon Spain has the seal “I calculate & reduce” since 2017, stamps that recognize, by the Ministry for the Eco-logical Transition and the Demographic Challenge, its efforts to calculate, make its footprint transparent and reduce it.
