Could H2O OS replace Oxygen OS on OnePlus smartphones?

OnePlus is owned by Oppo and the two brands agreed to a merger last year. Thus, the two overlays Color OS and Oxygen OS should merge. This result could be called H2O OS.

A few months ago, OnePlus announced its merger with its parent company Oppo. The smartphones of the two brands will thus share the same overlay in the future. A name is already beginning to emerge: H2O OS.

It is the Indian leaker Mukul Sharma who shares the thing on Twitter. His statements are supported by the fact that the brand introduced this term recently. However, the situation is unclear. Does H2O OS designate the OnePlus version of the common overlay (which will be a little different from Oppo’s)? Or is he referring to this common overlay in the whole? In any case, we can only notice the “chemical” nod from OnePlus which would combine Oxygen OS (its European overlay) and Hydrogen OS (its Chinese overlay) for H²O OS.

OnePlus and Oppo hand in hand

In a convergence effort, OnePlus and Oppo want to offer the same unified overlay on smartphones of both brands. We already have the first result of this fusion. Indeed, OnePlus smartphones, the 10 Pro in the lead, now run on Color OS in China, an Oppo overlay.

In the long term, Oppo and OnePlus should therefore share the same and unique overlay (this H2OOS?). However, the difference between the two brands will remain, since only the kernel will be common. Pete Lau has thus promised that the OnePlus will keep certain particularities, especially in terms of design. Now we just have to wait to see this result.

We do not yet know when Europe will be affected by all these changes, but in any case it should make things easier in China. A unified overlay means less R&D costs as well as greater standardization in updates.

Anyway, the OnePlus 10 Pro is the latest smartphone announced by the brand and it should arrive in Europe in the coming months. It will be well equipped with Oxygen OS in our region, which many consider to be one of the best Android overlays on the market.
