Covid-19: Scientists discover method to block infection, end of pandemic?

Since the pandemic by Covid-19 the scientists around the world have focused their research on finding answers that help fight the coronavirus, and today a new finding uncovered a method to block infection, which could mean the end of infections.

A team of scientists of the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL), in Switzerland, has discovered a method to prevent the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes Covid-19, infect other cells, something that may be key in future treatments against this disease.

Experts have discovered how certain enzymes transform fatty acids into one of the most important components of the coronavirus, the protein “spike” that forms the spiny membrane, key in the process of infection to other cells.

Effective in infections of other viruses

Consequently, drugs capable of modifying fatty acids “effectively prevent SARS-CoV-2 from infecting other cells,” EPFL said in a statement, underlining that the finding can also be applied against other viruses, such as influenza or influenza. herpes.

The study, which has been published in the specialized journal “Developmental Cell”, explains that the transformation of fatty acids is known in specialized terms as S-acylation and is carried out by enzymes called zDHHC-acetyltransferases.

These enzymes add fatty acids to proteins and amino acids in order to optimize their functions, including, in the case of viruses, their ability to infect neighboring cells.

The authors concluded that Spike S acylation is crucial for the formation of highly infectious viruses. Consequently, researchers were able to show that lipid-modifying drugs that interfere with Spike’s palmitoylation effectively prevented SARS-coV-2 from infecting cells.

“Our study points to S-acylating enzymes and lipid biosynthesis enzymes as new antiviral therapeutic targets,” says van der Goot. “These findings are likely relevant to other virus involved, like influenza and herpes. ”
