Crystal Dynamics prepares a new Tomb Raider with Unreal Engine 5

Today we were expecting an event with a major announcement regarding Unreal Engine 5, not Tomb Raider, and indeed it has. What we did not expect is that the announcement of a game that is being developed with said platform could end up overshadowing the main announcement. But, of course, this is better understood knowing that we are talking about the Lara Croft franchise, and that Crystal Dynamics has confirmed at the event that they are already working on the next installment of Tomb Raider, and that they have chosen Unreal Engine 5 for that purpose. Expectations at this point are obviously very high.

There has been no additional information about this new installment of Tomb Raider, the first after almost four years that have elapsed since the launch of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which was released in 2018 and completed the trilogy started by Tomb Raider and its continuation Rise of the Tomb Raider. Almost four years in which it seems likely that the studio has given its latest titles a spin, especially Shadow of the Tomb Raider, thinking how to improve some of the shadows we saw in a title that, however, was not bad at all .

He has not given us, yes, any more information about the title in development. We do not know the name, release date and, even less, nothing about the plot. What’s more, they haven’t even shown us a single frame. However, knowing that the base of this new Tomb Raider will be Unreal Engine 5 already tells us that it will be a true nexg-gen, although we can also expect high technical requirements, especially if we want to play it with advanced graphics modes.

As I was saying, however, the announcement of this new Tomb Raider, about which we still know nothing, has overshadowed an event organized by Epic Games to announce that, finally, Unreal Engine 5 is available to all developers who want to use it. And at Epic they have chosen not to attend the announcement alone, rather on the contrary, at a certain point in the event they have shown an image with the logos of the companies that are already developing in Unreal Engine 5. Additionally, to make it easier for developers to familiarize themselves with what’s new in Unreal Engine 5, Epic Games has also released a game created with said environment and editablewhich will therefore allow you to tinker with the guts of a 100% Unreal Engine 5 title and, being designed for this purpose, will most likely make use of a large part of the new features of this new version of Epic’s game development environment Games.

On what to expect from the platform chosen for the future new Tomb Raider title, Epic Games has already been showing us some progress, among which I prefer Matrix Awakens, a playable demo for PlayStation 5 that left many with their mouths open.
