For several months now, Disney+ has expressed its desire to transform your living room into a cinema. Logical, when you know the bad habit taken by the firm with big ears to release its latest novelties directly on the platform, without going through dark rooms…

In September 2021, Disney+ took a first step by offering the IMAX format on a dozen Marvel films. As a reminder, this format makes it possible to offer a larger image, around 26%, than the ratio traditionally used in cinema. Prestigious directors no longer swear by IMAX cameras, such as Denis Villeneuve (Dune, Prisoners, Premier Contact) without forgetting Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer, Tenet, Interstellar).

In France, only 10 films are offered in IMAX format on Disney+. Here is the full list:

  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Doctor Strange
  • Captain American: Civil War
  • Guardians of the Galaxy – Volume 2
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • Black Panther
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Avengers: Endgame
  • Captain Marvel

We knew that the next step was to adding immersive DTS sound sfor IMAX-compatible films available in the Disney+ catalog. Only, we didn’t have a date yet. It is now done. In effect, the American company has just confirmed the arrival of DTS sound in 2023.

DTS sound is coming to Disney+ IMAX movies

DTS and Disney said in a press release that the DTS soundtrack for IMAX “will enable an elevated end-to-end experience, specially calibrated to deliver IMAX-quality picture and sound to fans at home.” Attention, let us specify that for the moment, Disney did not specify what type of DTS (standard, HD Master Audio, X, etc.) this will be.

We’re excited to roll out the next evolution of IMAX Enhanced technology on Disney+ in the coming year. This unique collaboration extends our longstanding relationship between Disney and IMAX, and we look forward to bringing this new, immersive audio experience and premium playback quality for current and future titles to our audiences around the world.” said Jerrel Jimerson, executive vice president of streaming at Disney.
