The Tesla Model S Plaid may no longer be the world’s fastest electric car, having recently been overtaken by the Rimac Nevera, but it’s still a benchmark when it comes to speed. Tesla cars have historically always been faster than their rivals from Lucidthe Air sedans, which led Elon Musk to announce that he was convinced that the manufacturer would go bankrupt.

However, Lucid clearly hasn’t said his last word. The manufacturer is working on a new version of its electric sedan, the Lucid Sapphire, which will arrive in 2023. It has the particularity of being equipped with three motors, and of offering more than 1200 horsepower, more than the 1020 horsepower of the Tesla Model S Plaid. The YouTube channel Hagerty managed to find a prototype of the vehicle, and made compete the two electric supercars over 400 meters. They were also joined by the Bugatti Chiron.

The Tesla Model S Plaid has no chance over 400 meters against the Lucid Air Sapphire

At the start of the race, the Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire unsurprisingly leave the Bugatti Chiron in their rear view mirrorsince it does not take advantage of the impressive traction offered by electric cars.

The Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire both hit 60 mph in just 2.1 seconds, but the latter is 0.03 seconds faster than Elon Musk’s car. This lead is confirmed at the finish line, since it is the Lucid that wins. The Lucid Air Sapphire managed to cover 400 meters in just 9.1 seconds at a top speed of 251 km/h, making it a new speed record for a production carthat is to say a vehicle that has not undergone any major modification (apart from the tires) compared to the version marketed for all.

On his side, the Tesla Model S comes third after 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 245 km/h. It has meanwhile been overtaken by the Bugatti Chiron, which came second by a few meters in 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 251 km/h. We let you experience this crazy race with the video below.
