Electric cars: more than 6.5 million vehicles sold in 2021, an absolute record

According to data from EV-Volumes, electric car sales exploded in 2021, with more than 6.5 million vehicles sold. An increase of 108% compared to 2020. Unsurprisingly, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 are among the top three of the most popular models.

Sales of electric cars exploded in 2021. According to data from the latest EV-Volumes report relayed by our colleagues on the InsideEV’s site, more than 6.5 million electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles have found takers Last year. This is an increase of 108% compared to the figures recorded in 2020 (3.1 million EVs sold).

December 2021 was the most prolific month, with more than 907,000 new registrations, which is an absolute record. The previous monthly record was recorded in November 2021, with 720,000 copies sold. Here again, the figures for December 2021 buries those of December 2020, with 517,000 electric vehicles which found takers.

Unsurprisingly, the market shares of the electric swell in turn, reaching this time 15% in December 2021. November had already been strong with 11.5% market share. The vast majority of new green car sales are fully electric cars, with 11% market share. In other words, this represents one in ten cars.

The electric car market is doing better and better

Unsurprisingly, we find in the top three of the most popular models two Tesla, namely the Tesla Model 3 and the Model Y, followed by the Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV. But without further ado, here is the ranking of the best sales in December 2021 and throughout 2021:

  1. Tesla Model 3: 83,032 and 500,713 in 2021
  2. Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV: 55,742 and 424,138 over the year 2021
  3. Tesla Model Y: 79,621 and 410,517 in 2021
  4. Volkswagen ID.4: 19,174 and 121,631 over the year 2021
  5. BYD Qin Plus PHEV: 17,286 and 111,553 in 2021
  6. Li Xiang One EREV: 14,087 and 90,491 over the year 2021
  7. BYD Han EV: 10,307 and 86,901 in 2021
  8. BYD Song Pro/Plus PHEV: 15,123 and 78,973 in 2021
  9. Changan Benni EV: 10,404 and 76,454 over the year 2021
  10. Volkswagen ID.3: 8,563 and 76,278 over the year 2021

For those who are unfamiliar with the Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV, it is a small electric city car, which was particularly successful on the Chinese market, exceeding the 50,000 copies sold in December 2021 alone. Simply put, no other electric vehicle has matched such performance in just 30 days and in a single country. In total and over the whole of 2021, 424,138 Wuling Hong Guang Mini EVs found takers.

On the side of the American manufacturer, the Tesla Model 3 exceeded 500,000 units sold in 2021which makes it the best-selling electric car for the 4th consecutive year since 2018. As for the Model T, EV-Volumes estimates its annual sales at more than 410,000 copies in 2021.
