Firefox 109 gives ad blockers respite, but it’s unclear for how long

The transition to Google’s Manifest V3 is one of those little events that nobody talks about, but which nevertheless a considerable effect on all Internet users. This platform, of which Edge, Opera, and other Chromium-based browsers currently using V2, determines how extensions interact with the browser. They define the parameters that the plugins are allowed to change and the actions that they can perform.

The adoption of Manifest V3 is supposed to improve the safety of Internet usersbut there is nevertheless a point on which it complicates the task of developers extensions: ad blockers. By replacing the Web Request API with the Declarative Net Request API, Manifest V3 risks disable many ad-blockers.

Firefox developers initially opposed this decision, but they seem to have turned their jackets around. Firefox 109 was released yesterday, and it does adopt the Manifest V3 extension system. The ad-blockers may be broken in Mozilla’s browser. That said, the foundation wants to be reassuring. Rather than strictly adhering to Manifest V3, it also allows programmers to use features of V2.

Mozilla states on its blog: we will maintain WebRequest support in MV3. To maximize compatibility with other browsers, we will also support DeclarativeNetRequest. We will continue to work with content blockers and other key users to identify current and future workarounds, as appropriate.” In addition to support for the Manifest V3 extension system, Firefox 109 sports a modified interface, with a new simplified extension management box.
