Future high-end Android smartphones would have reduced battery life

Future premium Android smartphones could show a lower autonomy compared to their predecessors. According to a leak, the Cortex X3 cores that will equip the next chips from Qualcomm and Samsung would fish for energy efficiency at half mast.

According to information obtained by our colleagues from NotebookCheck, future high-end Android smartphones would have a lower autonomy compared to current models. Citing a leak from Taiwan, the outlet claims that ARM’s Cortex X3 architecture would be less efficient than the Cortex X2 architecture.

Barring surprise, future high-end SoCs from Qualcomm and Samsung should rely on high-performance cores based on Cortex X3. Current chipsets, such as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and the Exynos 2200, embed cores designed according to the Cortex X2 architecture.

Chips with ARM’s Cortex 3 cores would consume more power

ARM’s X3 architecture is rumored to offer a slight increase in performance compared to the Cortex X2. On the other hand, this future architecture would suffer from an energy efficiency down 10% when the core is clocked at 3 GHz. For the record, the Cortex X2 already showed a lower efficiency compared to the Cortex X1.

Concretely, all phones that will be powered by a chip with Cortex X3 cores risk consuming more electrical energy. This decrease in efficiency could reduce the maximum autonomy of the terminalsincluding future high-end flagships from Samsung.

The ARM architecture should, however, hold its own thanks to 100% increase in performance in the field of artificial intelligence. We imagine that chip manufacturers could rely on the power of AI to adapt energy consumption.

To compensate, manufacturers could also integrate larger batteries within their smartphones. In addition, it is always possible to adapt the energy consumption through software optimizations.

According to information obtained by NotebookCheck, it is rumored that Qualcomm would like to develop the architecture of its cores internally rather than depending on ARM solutions. This is not the first time that the American founder has developed its own architecture. Qualcomm had previously used cores based on its own architecture on the Snapdragon 855 and Snapdragon 865 SoCs. Cores based on Qualcomm’s architecture would not be ready until 2024.
