Galax debuts PCIe Gen5 SSD with the HOF Extreme 50

The supply of storage solutions attached to the PCIe Gen5 interface is still limited. And it is surprising considering its support for the latest processing platforms from Intel and AMD. Even if it is with drops, at least they continue to arrive and the latest is the HOF Extreme 50 SSD from the Chinese manufacturer Galax that has just been marketed in its country of origin.

Like all drives that have arrived so far, the HOF Extreme 50 SSD uses the Phison E26 controller. It supports the latest version of the NVMe protocol and includes the CoXProcessor technology patented by this specialist to improve performance, energy efficiency, AI-assisted storage and latency. You know, on SSD the controller is a key component And until solutions from giants such as Samsung and Western Digital arrive, it seems that it will be the one used by the majority of integrators.

Galax combines the Phison chip with Micron 232-layer 3D NAND flash memories and the addition of 4 Gbytes of LPDDR4 DRAM memory that acts as a cache to move the most accessed data. Its format is the popular M.2 2280.

The unit achieves sequential speeds up to 10,000 MB/s reading and 9,500 MB/s writing. Random 4K performance peaks at 1,500,000 / 1,250,000 read/write IOPS respectively. The maximum strength rating is 1,400TBW (Minimum Written Tbytes) and its warranty will be five years like the rest of the PCIe 5.0 solid-state drives.

Another outstanding aspect of this model is its refrigeration system. You already know that as they have increased performance and reduced size, the operating temperature has increased. And not little. Therefore, they need at least one set of heatsinks or as in this case a special system with copper heat dissipation fins and a small active fan with 4-pin PWM power supply, which can automatically adjust its speed according to the temperature.

The HOF Extreme 50 SSD is available in two versions with 1 or 2 Tbytes of capacity storage. Its price is 2,499 yuan, 363 dollars to change. Galax has confirmed international launch in the coming weeks and new series with even more performance, which will exceed 12 Gbytes per second.
