Garmin formalized in the press the Varia eRTL615, a rear light that also acts as a radar for electric bikes. The latter is capable of detect vehicles behind the cyclist over a distance of 140 meters and to give the alert, by ringing or by notification in the event of danger. It is coupled with a rear light that emits up to four lighting patterns with different intensities. 20 lumens for steady mode, 8 for platoon mode, 29 in night flash mode, and 65 in day flash mode.

Radar Varia eRTL615 works without battery and is powered directly by plugging into the electric bike. It is indeed possible to connect it using a Bosch, Shimano or even USB-A adapter. Thanks to the mobile application, it is possible to view approaching cars within a radius of 140 meters. Users who do not wish to attach a smartphone to their handlebars, Garmin offers the same features on its connected watches compatible or on the company’s GPS.

By expanding its range of accessories for electric bikes, Garmin is focusing on a rapidly growing market. According to Le Figaro, in France alone, 738,454 electrically assisted bicycles (VAE) were sold in 2022, “that is more than one in four bicycles”. The various ecological conversion bonuses are probably not unrelated to the success of this means of transport.

If Garmin offers more advanced devices in the Varia range, such as the Varia RCT715, a radar with position light and integrated camera, the eRTL615 light has for it to be very energy efficient. Since it’s battery-free, you don’t have to worry about recharging it as long as it’s plugged into a compatible bike. However, peace of mind and road safety come at a price: the Varia eRTL615 and the appropriate adapter cable cost €330 on the manufacturer’s website.
