Google’s fiber reaches 20 Gb/s and is looking for new testers

Google is currently testing a new speed for its fiber optic connection: 20 Gb/s. How to download a 15 GB 4K UHD movie in less than a second, that’s a dream, isn’t it?

Whether Google is now known worldwide for its search engine or its Android operating system, the Mountain View giant is also an internet service provider in the United States.

Until then, the maximum speed of a fiber connection by Google reached 8 Gb / s down (and you have to spend 150 euros to take advantage of it, but that’s another story). But here it is Google has just reached a new milestone with a speed of 20 Gb/s!

Google tests its fiber at 20 Gb / s and offers it free to its users

A download speed of 20 Gb/s downlink is what Google Fiber now promises. With such a velocity, it is possible to recover a 100 GB file in just 5 seconds. Of course, it is necessary to be equipped from start to finish with equipment capable of accepting such a speed without suffering the slightest bottleneck. And it is to be hoped that the servers opposite are also capable of sending the file in question at 20 Gb/s.

Which is hardly conceivable for the general public at the present time. On the other hand, one can very well imagine a multi-station use for companies, schools, or even homes in which a large number of connected devices reside.

Remember that, for the moment, Google Fiber is only available in the United States. But it is developing at breakneck speed and has become a serious competitor for the two biggest operators in the country, Verizon and AT&T. The service is currently being tested at the School of Science and Engineering at the University of Missouri. Google also wishes to extend its test and is launching a call for applications: 8 other organizations can join its program, pending deployment on a larger scale. As this is a test, companies and organizations are currently enjoying completely free access to its 20 Gb/s fiber.

In France, Free holds the prize for the fastest consumer speed. With its Freebox Delta, the operator promises a speed of up to 10 Gb / s going down (in reality, we are more around 8 Gb / s, which is already an excellent score). By way of comparison, the maximum speed of Livebox 6 from Orange and Bbox ultym from Bouygues is 2 Gb/s, while that of Premium Fiber from SFR is also 8 Gb/s.
