How to use a PLC correctly: three things you must be clear about

PLC devices are an excellent choice for take our Internet connection to places that might seem impossible to reach, in a very simple, fast way and without having to make a significant investment. These advantages are precisely what differentiate this type of device from the classic Wi-Fi repeaters.

Think, for example, of the problems you would have to face to take your Internet connection from a ground floor to an attic. It would be two stories away, with all the obstacles and barriers What would you find along the way? Opting for Wi-Fi repeaters would not be the best, and running a cable from the main router to that floor would be complicated.

In that scenario, the best option would be a PLC kit. This works in a very simple way, this kit consists of two units, one input and one output. The first one is placed in a socket near the router, and we connect it to it by Ethernet cable. Once this is done, we just have to connect the output device to a socket in the attic and that’s it, we will have Internet connection on that floor thanks to signal transmission through the electrical network. If we opt for a PLC with a Wi-Fi repeater we can connect both wired and wireless.

How to correctly use a PLC

We have already seen that these types of devices are very easy to use, but it is important to bear in mind that there are a series of basic guidelines that we must follow in order for these types of devices to work correctly, and so that they do not cause any type of problem. In this article we are going to explain the three most important keys.

1.-A PLC should not be connected to power strips or thieves

The reason is very simple, electrical interference can occur due to other things that we have connected, and in the end signal quality will be seriously affected. The consequences could be very diverse, but in general we will notice:

  • Low stability in the Internet connection.
  • Loss of speed and poor performance.
  • Microcuts and drops in the connection.

2.-Avoid placing them near other devices

The goal is to prevent them from being affected by the noise that these devices can generate. It is very important because PLC devices are very sensitive to electrical noise and interferenceand because this in the end can make a very important difference.

Although those devices do not share the same socket as a PLC could cause interference if they are very close to it, and for this reason it is best to try to move the input unit as far as possible from other devices connected to the electrical network.

3.-It is better not to use the integrated socket

Many PLCs come with an integrated plug that allows us not to have to sacrifice the plug where we are going to connect it. As is evident, this has a counterpart, and that is that if we use said integrated socket we would be creating a source of interference.

To compensate for this problem, those types of PLCs They come with an interference filter, but in the end it is best to try not to use the plug. If it is essential for us to use that plug, we can try and leave it if the experience meets our needs, but in devices that do not have said filter, I can tell you that it will not be good at all.
