Intel Unveils Intel Alder Lake-HX for Premium Laptops

Intel Vision is being celebrated these days, and one of the most anticipated announcements, and that we had already anticipated, was the Alder Lake-HX family a set of chips targeted at the high-performance laptop market. And with the cards on the table, we can confirm that Intel has not disappointed us. Quite the contrary, and in the virtuous path in which they have been immersed mainly since the arrival of this twelfth generation, with Alder Lake-HX they surpass themselves again.

As you may remember, last January the Alder Lake-H, Alder Lake-P and Alder Lake-U families were presented, with which the twelfth generation Intel Core landed on the laptop market. The top of the range was marked, at that time, by the Intel Core i9-12900H (and its unlocked sibling, the 12900HK), with its 14 cores (six high-performance and eight high-efficiency) and 20 threads, with a maximum frequency of up to five gigahertz, 24 megabytes of L3 cache, and all with a base consumption (without turbo) of only 45 watts.

Now Con Alder Lake-HX Intel goes one step further, with chips with up to 16 cores (eight for performance and eight for efficiency) which, as you may have already calculated in your head, do indeed offer an amazing total of 24 threads. Personally, and especially considering that we are talking about integrated for laptops, it seems to me a real barbarity (in a good way, eye), and even more so if we take into account that we are talking about processors with a base consumption of only 55 watts, it is say 10 more than the Alder Lake-H series. Of course, when the time comes to give everything, its consumption can grow to 157 watts.

As you can see, the top of the range of Alder Lake-HX is pointed out by the Core i9-12950HX and 12900HX, whose main difference is the first supports ECC (Error Correcting Code) memory and is compatible with the Intel vPro platform. For the rest, and as you can see, both have 16 cores, eight performance (between 2.3 and 5 gigahertz) and eight efficiency (between 1.7 and 3.6 gigahertz) for a total of 24 threads. Both have 30 megabytes of L3 cache. In the graphics section, the integrated GPU has 32 execution units and is capable of performing at a speed of up to 1.55 gigahertz.

The second step of Alder Lake-HX is made up of the chips that join the Core i7 family. In this group we find three options, although two of them share specifications and differ from each other by the same points as the two Core i9 Alder Lake-HX, that is, in Intel vPro support and compatibility with RAM with ECC . Are the Core i7-12850HX and 12800HXboth also with 16 cores (up to 4.8 gigahertz) and 24 threads, 25 megabytes of L3 cache and GPU with 32 execution units and a frequency of 1.45 gigahertz.

Close this group of Alder Lake-HX on Core i7-12650HXcomposed of 14 cores, six performance (between 2 and 4.7 gigahertz) and eight efficiency (between 1.5 and 3.3 gigahertz) for a total of 20 threads and equipped with 24 megabytes of L3 cache memory.

We finally go down to the Alder Lake-HX Core i5, where we find two integrated ones. First of all we have the Core i5-12600HX, made up of 12 cores, four for performance (between 2.5 and 4.6 gigahertz) and eight for efficiency (between 1.8 and 3.3 gigahertz) for a total of 16 threads. It integrates 18 megabytes of L3 GPU cache with 32 execution units at 1.35 gigahertz and is compatible with Intel vPro and ECC error-correcting RAM. Finally there is the Core i5-12450HXwith eight cores (four of each type) and twelve threads, 12 megabytes of L3 cache and a GPU with 16 execution units and a speed of 1.5 gigahertz.

Alder Lake-HX: Performance

Having seen the new Intel chipsets, which will be responsible for the highest performing laptops on the market, it is time to review the properties that are inherent to this new set of chipsets, and that is that the differences between Alder Lake-HX and Alder Lake-H, the two options for users looking for the highest performance, are not limited to the use of a higher number of cores, which provides higher performance. There are other very interesting news. Of course, before entering them, it is worth seeing the performance comparison shown by Intel:

As we can see, Alder Lake-HX not only poses a significant leap in performance compared to its predecessor generation, represented by the Intel Core i9-11980HK, it is that an evolution can also be seen with respect to the still recent Core i9-12900HK, which until now held the gold medal in terms of performance. Seen this jump within the same generation, there are more and more expectations regarding what we will see with the arrival of Raptor Lake.

With Alder Lake-HX Intel puts a focus on workstations dedicated to very demanding tasks in professional environments. This is clear to us when we see the support of Intel vPro and RAM with ECC. However, it is evident that an important part of the target audience of this new series of chips are gamers. Thus, as a sample of the performance obtained by combining a Core i9-12900HX with a GeForce RTX 3080 Titanium Mobile and 64 gigabytes of DDR5-4800 RAM (the type of SSD used is not indicated), Intel shows us these references:

News from Alder Lake-HX

The most remarkable, without a doubt, is that With Alder Lake-HX, support for PCIe 5 finally comes to notebooks. As we already told you at the time, Alder Lake marked the debut of DDR5 and PCIe 5, but until now only the first of both technologies had reached laptops. Now, with the leap offered by HX chips, laptops can also take full advantage of the fastest SSDs on the market, using x16 or 2×8 modes.

Another very interesting novelty is that all Alder Lake-HX SKUs have been designed with overclocking in mind and, consequently, they support the OC of the system memory and the CPU cores, and for this purpose we will be able to use the set of technologies and tools designed and updated by Intel for this purpose.

With the announcement of the new Alder Lake-HX chips, Intel has also advanced us some of the laptops that will equip integrated HXand it is not surprising to know that we are talking about some of the highest performing models on the market, as you can see in the following image.

We already have, therefore, the Intel chips for the equipment that will determine the top-of-the-range standard of the twelfth generation Intel Core in the notebook market. Surely let’s not take long to start seeing the first performance data, either in prototypes or in final devices that are still in the testing phase. It will be very interesting to know its first steps in the real world, and compare the Alder Lake-HX chips with the rest of the current generation chips.
