Is my Mac compatible with the new macOS?

Apple introduced the new macOS Sonoma operating system, along with changes and feature enhancements we’ve already seen. And although it is a rather continuous version, in this post we are going to answer the question of whether this new version is compatible (or not) with our Mac model. So Let’s see the computers that do support the systemand which ones will be left out of the update.

These models are the ones that update to macOS Sonoma

With every system update, there are always Mac models that fall ship and can no longer access the new features and tools that Apple provides. However, if you have one of these computer models, you will be able to install macOS Sonoma:

  • Mac mini from 2018: with Intel processors
  • 2020 Mac mini: with M1 processors
  • Mac mini from 2023 with M2 chip
  • Mac mini from 2023 with M2 Pro chip
  • 2022 Mac Studio with M1 Max chip
  • 2022 Mac Studio with M1 Ultra chip
  • 2023 Mac Studio with M2 Max chip
  • 2023 Mac Studio with M2 Ultra chip
  • 2019 Mac Pro with Intel Processors
  • Mac Pro from 2023 with the M2 Ultra processor
  • MacBook Pro 13″ 2018: Intel processor and TouchBar
  • MacBook Pro 15″ 2018: Intel processor and TouchBar
  • MacBook Pro 13″ 2019: Intel processor and TouchBar
  • MacBook Pro 15″ 2019: Intel processor and TouchBar
  • MacBook Pro 13″ 2019: Intel processor and two Thunderbolt ports
  • MacBook Pro 16″ 2019: Intel processor and TouchBar
  • MacBook Pro 13″ 2020: Intel, two Thunderbolt ports
  • 2020 13″ MacBook Pro: Intel, four Thunderbolt ports
  • 2020 13″ MacBook Pro with Apple M1
  • 2021 16″ MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon
  • 2021 14″ MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon
  • 2022 13″ MacBook Pro with M2
  • 2023 16″ MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon
  • 2023 14″ MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon
  • 2018 MacBook Air with Intel Processor (13″)
  • 2019 MacBook Air with Intel Processor (13″)
  • 2020 MacBook Air with Intel Processor (13″)
  • 2020 MacBook Air 13″ M1
  • 2022 MacBook Air 13″ with M2
  • 2023 MacBook Air 15″ with M2
  • 2017 iMac Pro
  • iMac Retina 4K, 21.5″ and Intel processor (2019)
  • iMac Retina 5K, 27″ and Intel processor (2019)
  • iMac Retina 5K, 27″ and Intel processor (2020)
  • 24″ iMac, M1, Dual Thunderbolt Ports (2021)
  • 24″ iMac, M1, Four Thunderbolt Ports (2021)

Thus, all Mac models prior to those on this list will be left out of the new Sonoma version. So that, computers such as the 2017 MacBook Pro, or the 21.5″ and 27″ range of the 2017 iMac Retina, will only be able to update to macOS Ventura. In the case of the MacBook Air, the model presented in 2017 already only updated to macOS Monterey, so the cut remains in the models that belong to 2018, onwards.

The new version of macOS Sonoma is expected to arrive in the fall of this year, and developer betas are already available through an Apple developer account. Logically, computers that do not appear on this list will not support them either.
