Mercedes car owners will soon be able to enjoy a new feature in their already luxurious vehicles: ChatGPT. The automaker has just collaborated with Microsoft to add OpenAI’s chatbot to its MBUX infotainment system.

The system will initially be available through a three-month beta program for US customers in select vehicles, but Mercedes says it will consider a wider and more permanent rollout in the future.

Mercedes will get even smarter thanks to ChatGPT

ChatGPT integration could allow the automaker’s “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant to become much smarter than it already is. Rather than just responding to simple, pre-programmed commands such as “Turn on the air conditioning” or “What’s the weather forecast?” “, he should be able to engage in natural conversations on virtually any topic.

Mercedes says it’s “exploring” ChatGPT plugins to enable tasks like booking restaurants or movie tickets through natural language, but those features are likely to come later. Eric Boyd, vice president of Microsoft’s artificial intelligence platform, said the new integration would, among other things, improve voice commands and interaction, task performance skills, and the ability to ask follow-up questions.

The partnership between Microsoft and Mercedes marks one of the first specific use cases of ChatGPT. As in other sectors, the potential applications of ChatGPT in the automotive industry are the subject of increasing debate, and it now remains to be seen whether or not this integration will be successful.

Mercedes owners in the United States equipped with the MBUX infotainment system will be able to test the ChatGPT system from June 16 using the voice command Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program “. As a reminder, only a few Mercedes cars use the MBUX infotainment system, including the Mercedes EQB, the Mercedes EQA 250 AMG Line or the Mercedes EQE that we were able to test.
