Kamala Khan was originally created to reflect the captain marvel legacy, but with a different identity. The character integrates many anecdotes from the life of its own creator, Sana Amanat, whose family is of Pakistani origin. It all came about in a conversation with Stephen Wacker in which she told him how difficult her childhood was carrying a double life halfway between muslim traditions of his family and american culture in which she was integrated into her school, with her friends and classmates.

Almost without realizing it, Amanat discovered a unique opportunity to explain the Muslim diaspora in the United States from a perspective that only she could tell. Subsequently, she made up the character so that she would be a second row superheroine. This is specified in details such as Kamala was born in New Jersey (just like her creator) and is not from New York, like most Marvel superheroes.

The foundation on which this new Ms Marvel is to create a superheroine about a person who already has a double life. There were many aspects that were taken into account so that the race of the girl was as ambiguous as possible, as well as the design of the character. Its creators wanted Kamala to have a muslim origin, but moving it away from any symbol that generates rejection among Western Muslim women and with a design and development that is deep enough to emulsify audiences with opposing cultures in the figure of a fictional character. Without a doubt, a very ambitious vision that has earned her adaptation to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There is some discrepancy between the powers of Kamala Khan in the comics and what has been seen in the trailers of Ms Marvel. Khan’s main ability in the comics is the elongation. This means you can extend their limbs as much as you need, as well as twist, enlarge and shrink, getting more force the bigger you get or even compressing enough to measure the thickness of a sheet of paper.

On the other hand, Kamala Khan can heal fairly quickly of wounds, even from firearms. However, he has a limit, and he feels tired if he has to heal many parts of his body at the same time. On the other hand, Khan can also transform into other people and even objects in the comics, though he uses these abilities very rarely.

Where do Ms. Marvel’s powers come from?

ms marvel bracelet

In the trailers we’ve seen of the series, this new Ms. Marvel has powers that are not in the comics. In fact, Kamala wears a bracelet which seems to be the origin of his special abilities. In the comics, the bracelet exists and is a family heirloom that belonged to her great-grandmother, but it is not specified that her powers come from there.

Also in the trailers it can be seen that Kamala, played by Iman Vellani, uses powers that do not exist in the comics like throwing cosmic energy or even make energy shields. This differs from what was told on paper. Kamala’s powers in the comics come from a Terrigen bomb explosion. Kamala comes into contact with ‘The Terrigen Mists early in the morning, when he leaves a party of his high school classmates to which his parents had forbidden him to go. The girl begins to hallucinate with her favorite superheroes and wakes up the next day in her bed with her polymorph powers, her explanation is that the mist has awakened the inhuman genes of his bodygenetic material that is scattered throughout humanity and that can be activated in these circumstances.
