After unveiling the design of the PS VR 2 controller, Sony has just released the first official images of its next virtual reality headset. Unsurprisingly, its design is intended to be relatively close to that of the PS5, with particular emphasis on curves. According to the statements of the manufacturer, comfort will be at the center of the experience.
With the launch of the PS5, it was obvious that Sony was going to return to the virtual reality market with a new headset designed and shaped for its next-gen console. In February 2021, the manufacturer revealed the first information on the Playstation VR 2: a single cable will connect it to the console and it will be accompanied by a brand new controller, which will also take over certain features of the DualSense such as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.
In January 2022 and on the occasion of CES, the Las Vegas show dedicated to consumer electronics, Sony presented the PS VR 2 with great fanfare. And on Tuesday February 22, 2022, the Japanese brand has finally unveiled the first official images of the virtual reality headset. Unsurprisingly, the design of the PS VR 2 is very similar to that of the PS5.
“When our design team created the PS5 console, they were already envisioning the next-gen VR headset. So you will notice some commonalities. The PS5 console comes with straight edges because it’s supposed to sit on a flat surface. On the other hand, we have emphasized the curves of the PS VR 2 headset, because it will be in constant contact with the user. The headset will have rounded edges, reminiscent of those of the DualSense controller and the Pulse 3D headset”. explains Hideaki Nishino, vice president of planning and management of the PS VR platform.

Playstation VR 2: comfort above all
As Sony’s framework clarifies, ergonomics was at the center of the concerns of the brand’s designers.e. Thus, the PS VR 2 will adapt to all heads. And if we find some elements of the first model, such as the adjustable visor and the location of the stereo headphone output, the PS VR 2 will present some new features to improve comfort like :
- a lens adjustment wheel to change the distance of the lenses from the player’s eyes
- A slightly lower weight than the first model
- an integrated motor dedicated to headphone feedback
- A brand new ventilation system to prevent lens fogging
Sony states that PS VR 2 development kits are already in the hands of some development studios. Unfortunately, we will have to wait a little longer to know the release date of the beast.
