Samsung launches the Galaxy S23 in France with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, farewell to the Exynos?

Samsung’s Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra all feature Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and it doesn’t matter if it’s the version released in the US or Europe. Can we deduce that the South Korean manufacturer is saying goodbye to its homemade Exynos? We take stock.

Samsung Galaxy S23

It had become something of an institution, much to the chagrin of users: in Europe, Samsung’s Galaxy S were systematically equipped with an Exynos SoC. While in the United States, these same smartphones were entitled to a Qualcomm SoC. More powerful, more autonomous, the Snapdragons had everything to please. Except that Samsung did not hear it that way and tried for years to impose its own chips on European consumers.

But now, this year, the manufacturer has decided to standardize its range of Galaxy S around the world. Samsung has therefore ensured that the Galaxy S23, S23 + and S23 Ultra benefit from a single SoC: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Does this mean that Samsung has definitely drawn a line under its Exynos?

Is Samsung really going to abandon the Exynos?

If the S23 are now equipped with a Snapdragon in Europe, the migration of the manufacturer from the Galaxy S range actually dates back to the S20 FE. In 2020 already, Samsung left the choice to its users, by offering a smartphone equipped sometimes with a Snapdragon 865, sometimes with an Exynos 990. Even the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 of 2022 escaped the Exynos and enjoyed a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. So it was high time for the Galaxy S to do the same.

On the other hand, it seems that Samsung is not done with Exynos SoCs. Rest assured, they should not reappear with the S24 next year. Nevertheless, we know that Samsung has in its boxes for 2023 a Exynos 1330. The one will be dedicated to entry-level smartphones, like the future A14 5G.

The Exynos will therefore not completely bid us farewell, but it should now be reserved for the most affordable smartphones. Finally, remember that Exynos technology is also used in Samsung connected watches. Thus, the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 pulsate using an Exynos W920.
