Santoral: The Catholic Church celebrates this Thursday, October 21, Mother Laura of Saint Catherine of Siena.
On May 26, 1874, what would become known as Mother Laura of Saint Catherine of Siena was a recognized Catholic founder of the Missionaries of Mary Immaculate and Santa Catalina de Siena. She is the daughter of Juan de la Cruz Montoya and Dolores Upegui, people recognized as deeply Christian.
She was baptized the same day of her birth with the name of Maria Laura de Jesus. Her father was murdered when she was barely two years old. During his childhood he suffered a cruel and fratricidal war in which he defended the religion and the homeland, so his personal property was confiscated and his family was left in the poverty extreme.
Despite all this, the mother of Laura He taught him to forgive and to strengthen his Christian feelings. Years later she was orphaned, so at age 16 she entered the “Normal de Institutoras de Medellín” at age 16. At the end of their studies performs the so-called “Work of the Indians”.

In 1914 Maria Laura de Jesus was driven to do a “heroic” work at the service of the natives thanks to the call of Maximiliano Crespo, bishop of Santa Fe de Antioquia, and founded the congregation of the Missionaries of Mary Immaculate and Saint Catherine of Siena.
In this way he manages to end the discrimination racial of those who did not understand his longing to extend faith and “the knowledge of God” to the most remote places. Laura He spent the last nine years of his life in a wheelchair, yet he never stopped writing.
After a long agony, he died in Medellín on October 21, 1949 and was beatified on April 25, 2004 by Pope John Paul II, later he was canonized on May 12, 2013 by Pope Francis.
