Sega’s “Super Game” Project Will Involve AAA Titles and May Include NFTs

Last year, Sega announced a partnership with Microsoft for “Super Game“: a project to produce “large-scale global games” under the umbrella of cloud gaming. Few details had been released, but a recent interview shed light on such a project.

More details on Sega’s Super Game

In the conversation posted on Sega Japan’s recruiting website, the company’s executive vice president, Shuji Utsumi, explained that the “Super Game” will encompass a wide variety of AAA games — large-scale titles that involve significant budgets.

“We define ‘Super Game’ as developing AAA titles that cross Sega’s wide range of technologies, and we aim to achieve this in our five-year plan. […] A number of titles are being developed within the framework of the Super Game, and while each title will vary, there is no doubt that they will be interactive titles that go beyond the traditional framework of games,” revealed Utsumi.

Despite not exemplifying an example of a Super Game title, the executive stated that these games must meet the four criteria: cross-platform, global multilingual support, simultaneous worldwide release and AAA “label”.

Katsuya Hisai, the developer’s general manager, added that “several projects are underway for the Super Game” and that “about 50 people are already involved in this initial phase”. The total number of employees at the end of the project should amount to “several hundred”.

Project must involve cloud and NFTs

Keeping the atmosphere of mystery, Masayoshi Kikuchi, producer at Sega, hinted that the project could also involve cloud games and NFTs, as the executive sees both technologies as part of the future of games.

“It’s a natural extension for the future of gaming that will expand to embrace new areas such as cloud gaming and NFT. We are also developing the Super Game from the perspective of how far different games can be connected to each other,” said Kikuchi.

It is worth mentioning that the partnership between Sega and Microsoft announced last year was intended to explore the Xbox’s Azure cloud platform. Furthermore, the Japanese developer (and publisher) itself registered a “Sega NFT” trademark in January of this year. Connecting the dots, things start to make sense.

It is true that many doubts still remain, but the message was given: the Super Game will involve robust titles and will possibly include cloud or NFTs in its project.
