Telefónica completes the purchase of the mobile assets of Grupo Oi in Brazil

Telefónica has finally closed the purchase of the assets of the Oi Group related to the mobile telephony in Brazil. It has been almost two years since the first negotiations began and Telefónica launched a binding offer for Oi, and after the arrival of the agreement of all the parties involved in the operation, and prevailing over a rival offer, the operator has won them jointly with two others: Telecom Italia (TIM) and America Movil.

According to a report issued by the Oi Group to the regulators, the three companies that are going to carry out the joint purchase will pay Oi about 3,100 million dollars. The operator that will pay the most money in the operation will be Telecom Italia, followed by Telefónica, which will take the step through Vivo. As for América Móvil, it will be one of its subsidiaries that will participate in the acquisition: Claro. In addition, of the three operators, it will be the one that will pay the least amount.

Despite already having the agreement of all the parties, the companies still have to obtain, yes, the definitive authorization of the corresponding regulatory entities to be able to finalize the purchase, CADE and Anatel. But it is very unlikely that they will not get it, since they had already given the green light for the sale some time ago, yes, for this they had to meet certain conditions, already reviewed.

Telecom Italia has stated about this purchase, made through its Brazilian subsidiarythat with it, and the agreement of the operators, a new «balance of infrastructure in the brazilian market«, with the three operators «ensuring a high level of competition“, which will result in benefits for consumers and an investment “adequate» in the infrastructure and in the digital transformation of Brazil.

For its part, América Móvil has indicated that the transaction has created added value for its Claro divisionas well as for clients and shareholders through «high growth, the generation of operational efficiencies and improvements in the quality of service«.
