The Galaxy S23 Ultra would have a 12 MP selfie sensor, against 40 MP for the Galaxy S22 Ultra

A new report regarding the photo part of the Galaxy S23 Ultra has just fallen and, at first glance, this one is nothing to cheer about. Indeed, the leak mentions a 12 MP selfie sensor on Samsung’s next flagship, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra is equipped with a 40 MP selfie sensor. Is a big drop in performance to be expected? Not necessarily.

A few days ago, the Galaxy S23 Ultra received a new listing, this time from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). As often, this was the opportunity to discover a little more about the smartphone, in particular a detail that caught all the attention. Indeed, the listing mentions a 12 MP selfie sensor for Samsung’s next flagship.

This information is not trivial because, as a reminder, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is equipped with a 40 MP selfie sensor. At first glance, this therefore gives the impression of a fairly significant step back for the next generation of premium smartphones, especially since the MP sensor has been present on the Ultra models since the Galaxy S20. However, this configuration is not necessarily bad news.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra will not necessarily be less good in selfies

Indeed, the definition of the sensor is not the only data to be taken into account. As Samsung has proven to us on several occasions, software optimization also plays a major role in the quality of photos. If this is good, as is generally the case with the manufacturer’s smartphones, then we shouldn’t have too much to worry about.

As for the explanation of this choice, it could be that production costs are involved. Indeed, if the selfie sensor will be less imposing, this will not be the case for the main sensor which, for its part, will be entitled to a big leap forward with a definition of 200 MP. That said, remember that these figures are not everything, and that the smartphone will have to prove itself to win again in photos.
