Now researchers at the National Taiwan University, led by Professor Chung-Chih Wu, have just announced that they have succeeded in developing a 3D pixel configuration for OLED devices that improves light extraction, achieving an emission that exceeds the performance of a traditional OLED panel by up to 30%.

To do this they use a structure of 3D reflective pixels filled with a patterned high-index material. Created with different sizes, they found that the smaller the pixel, the greater the efficiency. Furthermore, the used filler is introduced into the concave region of the pixel by vacuum evaporation through small openings in the aligned thin metal mask (FMM), completing the configuration of reflective 3D pixels.
