Twitter “verified” a clearly fake account

They say that Elon Musk likes to be talked about a lot, and that was the main reason for buying Twitter. It is difficult to delve into a mind as complex as that of this character (yes, I am one of those who think that, in the case of Musk, the character has eaten the person) but, if said statement is correct, we can affirm without fear Let’s be wrong that the operation has been an absolute success, probably the greatest of his entire life, and an inspiring example for all those people who, at some time, have considered pursuing their dreams.

If the goal was to get people to speak well of him, then things haven’t gone so well, of course.. Having shown that his word is more or less as reliable as a fairground shotgun, that his principles vary more than the price of Bitcoin, and that his management style consists of laying off essential workers (and, after a few hours, have to ask them to come back), stop paying office rents, auction furniture and lose advertisers, it does not seem that it has become a creditor of particularly positive assessments, rather the opposite.

A good part of his actions at the head of Twitter have a very clear and totally legitimate reason for being: to clean up the accounts of the social network. However, in his frenzy towards the green numbers he has spared no put up for sale an element that was key to credibility of much of the information posted on the social network, verified user badges. It is true that their previous management was quite opaque, although those responsible tried to improve it on occasion, but without a doubt the previous system was better than the current model.

Twitter "verified" a clearly fake account

In recent days we have already seen some examples of the absurdity of the new system, like it was Musk himself, or at least that’s what he has implied, the one who has paid for the verification of certain celebrities or, as we told you yesterday, who has decided to add the banner to deceased personalities. Because, at least as far as I get, the oui-ha it is not an accepted means of payment to pay for the subscription to Twitter Blue. Of course, yes, but it is among the exclusive functions for subscribers and that is why I do not know it.

According to Musk, associating verification with Twitter Blue would kill bots and accounts fake, something we didn’t believe for a minute, especially after seeing the corporate identity theft that occurred with the launch of the feature. What I did not expect is that the social network itself would make it so clear. And it is that, as we can read in Variety, Twitter added gold verification to a fake Disney account that posted racist slurs. Specifically, the account (already removed) was “impersonating”, and I put it in quotes because it was clearly an account fakethat of a UK Disney channel that ceased its broadcasts, and closed its official account, in October 2020.

The yellow/gold checked, sIt is granted exclusively to companies and the media, and to obtain it, it is necessary to register with Verified Organizations, a subscription service that awards the gold badge and a square avatar. In other words, it is also paid and obtaining it is, at least in theory, more complex than obtaining the blue certificate. However, we can already get an idea of how the verification system works after learning about what happened. Of course, after the massive layoffs carried out by Musk, the surprising thing is that there is still someone dedicated to these tasks.
