Ubisoft reverses account closure

We will never finish being clear If what happened with Ubisoft, during these last hours, is a clarification on a policy that was already previously defined, or if we are facing what has become popular to call a cable collection, that is, a rectification of a previous action, after verifying the negative impact it has had. We have reasons to opt for both one and the other option, so in the end, everything will be subject to the personal interpretation of each one.

What I’m talking about? Just a couple of days ago we told you that a response provided by the official Ubisoft account at Twitter X, implied that the company arrogated the right to delete user accounts that remained inactive, even when their users have used them in the past to buy games of the company. In other words, one could end up losing all their purchases if Ubisoft wanted to.

The controversy did not take long to arrive, and it intensified even more when, also on the social network, the Ubisoft account confirmed that the closure of an account would also prevent being able to play their titles even if they have been purchased in other stores, such as Steam. And it is that, as unfortunately it has become popular among developers and distributors, it is necessary to have a user account of the same to access the games, regardless of where and in what format they were purchased.

Ubisoft reverses account closure

Now, with a good part of the community gamer on fire, the time has come for clarifications and, according to what we can read in VGC, Ubisoft says it won’t delete accounts that have purchased games, in addition to stating that they have never deleted an account that has been inactive for less than four years. Something that, without a doubt, generates some peace of mind in the face of a scenario in which, by surprise, we could find that our accounts, with the games acquired and associated with them, were lost forever.

However, and taking into account that the controversy began last week, It is somewhat surprising that Ubisoft has not spoken so far, despite the fact that this would have required an almost immediate response. Why did it take several days? If they have always been clear that accounts linked to purchased games would not be deleted, wouldn’t an official statement during the first hours have been enough? I think so, and this is what means that I do not rule out the theory of collecting the cable, after verifying that maintaining what was understood by everyone last week was, until now, the official position of the company.
