Viagra seems to be very effective in preventing Alzheimer’s disease

While the risk of developing Alzehimer’s disease appears to be lower in people taking viagra, studies remain cautious about the actual effectiveness of the drug.

A new study of size, carried out on more than seven million individuals has just made its conclusions. Taking sildenafil drugs can reduce the risk of developing a disease such as Alzheimer’s by almost 70%. A result that may surprise, especially when we know that the drugs sildenafil have little to do with our brain, they that we know in everyday life as little blue pills, often associated with the brand: “Viagra”.

But in addition to the benefits that we already know, Viagra would have many other abilities. Capable of treating erectile dysfunction, but also pulmonary hypertension, these little blue pills are being proven in many other areas. They would indeed be an effective remedy against malaria or certain forms of cancer. In this new study, on an unprecedented scale, Dr. Cheng, a researcher at the Cleveland Clinic, succeeded in isolating 13 molecules responsible for the development of the disease. This is for example the case with the “tau” protein. The latter is much less present in people treated with viagra.

Reduced risks, but no direct evidence

For the moment, only experiments with in vitro cells had made it possible to obtain such results. It is therefore the first time that the use of viagra has reached a population. After having done tests on more than 1600 drug candidates to overcome these 13 modules of development of the disease, the researchers turned to viagra which in addition to having been proven in terms of side effects, and also one of the drugs top performers on the list.

According to the data transmitted in the study, the risk would be reduced by more than 69% for people taking Viagra rather than non-users. This result would be even more pronounced in people suffering from type 2 “fatty” diabetes, or people with hypertension. The study specifies, however, that this is only an observation, a kind of before and after, and in no way a demonstration of the effect of Viagra on people suffering from Alzheimer’s. If the drug produces an effect that reduces the risk of developing the disease, which is very likely in view of the study, the latter is still unknown to the scientific world.
