Xbox still believes that this is not the time for virtual reality in games

Xbox future without virtual reality

In recent years it seemed that the virtual reality it had a lot to contribute to the gaming sector, and although it has, the reality is that the general acceptance of the public has not been as mainstream as might be expected. And that’s just what Microsoft continues to think so far.

Xbox with virtual reality? Not for the moment

Xbox Series X review

In an interview conducted by The Hollywood Reporter Matt Booty (director of Xbox Game Studios), the Xbox manager has confirmed that the company has no plans for bet on virtual realitybasically because they understand that the audience requesting the format is still too small.

To understand these statements, you only need to contract two pieces of information. On the one hand, Booty himself assures that Xbox games must reach 10 million players to be considered a success. At the other extreme, we can see the figures for the first generation of PlayStation VR, which reached 5 million units at the end of 2019.

That is to say, if the PlayStation proposal did not exceed 5 million units, Microsoft probably does not want to launch similar hardware, precisely when they sell fewer consoles than Sony.

Does the technology fail?

Half Life: Alyx

PlayStation once again demonstrated that it continues to trust virtual reality as a modality parallel to the most classic gaming with a gamepad and a large-inch screen. Its new VR headset has vastly improved its features, and while the viewing experience is great, not all users will manage to go several minutes with their glasses on without nausea from prolonged use of the headset.

A posture that does not change

It is not the first time that Microsoft has spoken about it. On more than one occasion, they have clarified that they are not against virtual reality, but that it is simply not the approach they are looking for in their development. And obviously they are not going to deny the undeniable either, and they have confirmed that when the technology becomes obvious, they will not hesitate to pay attention to it.

Will Apple change the industry?

Apple Vision Pro

But if there is someone who currently attracts the spotlight of everything related to virtual reality, that is none other than Apple. Those from Cupertino presented their VisionProa highly advanced viewer that promises a virtual reality and augmented reality experience unlike anything we’ve seen before.

The problem with the viewfinder is that it will have a price that will be close to 4,000 euros, and that is nothing like what we have seen so far. It may be a first generation that needs to mature and evolve into something more commercial, but it will be something that we will only know with time. And that is precisely what Microsoft is asking for.
