The Tesla Model Y charges faster than ever thanks to its new battery

Tesla’s Model Y is known for its impressive performance and range, and it looks like the vehicle’s charging capabilities have been further improved with the introduction of a new battery pack from BYD.

A few weeks ago, we reported that an all-new Model Y RWD had gone into production at the Gigafactory in Berlin, Germany. This one swapped its old LFP prismatic battery signed CATL, against a new battery from BYD. The latter uses the technology called “Blade”, presented as safer and more reliable than traditional lithium-ion batteries, but which also offers better energy density.

The first owners of the Model Y equipped with the BYD battery have already carried out tests and compared the charging curves of the two variants. The results showed that the BYD Model Y quickly reached its maximum charging speed of 172 kW and maintained it until the battery reached 50% charge. On the other hand, the CATL version saw its charging speed drop and only reached 50 kW at 90%.

The new Model Y will spend less time at the charging station

Throughout the charging process, the BYD battery consistently exhibited faster and more sustained charging speeds. As you can see from the graph below, Model Y’s new battery should allow it to charge much faster than the old one, especially during the first few minutes of charging. This should greatly reduce the time you spend at the terminal if you decide not to fill the battery up to 100%.

While the new Model Y’s sustained 172kW charge rate with the BYD battery is a big step forward for future Tesla customers, rumors suggest Elon Musk is exploring the use of next-generation phosphate batteries with CATL for even higher energy density and faster charging speeds. The competition between BYD and CATL in the electric car market is expected to continue to intensify in the coming years.

The battery of the new Model Y wants to be safer

One of the main advantages of BYD’s “blade” battery pack is its design. The term “blade” refers to the design of the battery pack, which not only saves space, but also improves safety. According to BYD, the Blade battery pack has undergone rigorous testing, including fingernail penetration testing, extreme temperature conditions and overload testing. The results showed that the Blade battery did not emit smoke, catch fire or explode under these conditionsunlike traditional nickel-based electric vehicle batteries.

Additionally, BYD claims the Blade battery can last over 1.2 million miles after 3,000 charge and discharge cycles. This claim is backed up by the performance of the BYD Tang SUV, which already uses the Blade battery and boasts an impressive range of 505 kilometers on a single charge (NEDC) and rapid acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. . The Tang’s Blade battery can recharge from 30% to 80% capacity in just 30 minutes, with a DC power output of 110kW.

However, recording issues have been reported for Model Y with a BYD battery, which led to a temporary suspension of deliveries. Due to significant changes to the powertrain and structural design, the new Model Y requires a completely new registration process before you can receive your vehicle. However, this should quickly be fixed by Tesla. The Tesla Model Y is already the 3e best-selling car in the world, and we imagine that this new, even more interesting version should propel it to first place by the end of the year.
