YouTube adds numerous TV shows for free

Expanding its offering for the first time in years, YouTube has just officially announced that it will begin offering a service to users in the United States with the retransmission of thousands of free television programs (advertised, yes) such as Hell’s Kitchen, Heartland or Unsolved Mysteries, in what could be their first active move in the face of the increasingly competitive presence of on-demand services.

Until last year, YouTube had been trying to fill content gaps with its own programming through YouTube Originals. However, earlier this year he announced that he would largely abandon those ambitions and focus strictly on his Black Voices and YouTube Kids Funds projects.

Thus, Google’s platform will offer both shows and movies, with around 4,000 TV episodes and over 1,500 movies already available with classic titles such as 60 seconds, Runaway Bride or Legally Blonde, promising the arrival of up to 100 new titles every week.

What’s more, YouTube promises an enhanced viewing experience, with a new optimized navigation quite similar to other VOD platforms. Furthermore, many of these titles are now also available in high definition (limited to 1080p instead of 4K) with other enhancements such as 5.1 surround sound audio on compatible devices.

Unfortunately, this new system of free on-demand content will be limited at the moment for users within the United States, without having announced any details about its possible expansion to other international markets. Although we can always access them thanks to the use of VPNs.

And it seems that Google wants to carry out a first test behind closed doors, possibly due to the still quite limited amount of content. In fact, it is very possible that we will see a greater expansion and localization of its series catalog for its future arrival in Spain.
