2022 closes with 112,200 less self-employed in Spain

2022 has not ended in the best way as far as hiring is concerned. The data that the Active Population Survey (EPA) in the fourth quarter of 2022 they confirm the slowdown in job creation. The number of unemployed in Spain rises by 43,800 people in the last quarter of the year, the number of employed decreased by 81,900 people compared to the previous quarter and the number of self-employed workers also decreased by 34,700 people in the last quarter of the year.

“The last quarter of 2022 has been a very bad quarter for employment, where practically 82,000 jobs have been destroyed, something that has not happened since 2013. But it has also been so for the self-employed, with a total of 34,700 less self-employed and that leads to closing 2022 as an annus horribilis for the collective: 111,200 less self-employed in just one year. A real catastrophe.” says Lorenzo Amor, president of ATA.

“The situation of the self-employed and of many companies at the moment is very complex and undoubtedly if measures are not taken, we are going to see that the situation they are going through will be reflected in a further drop in the number of self-employed if no remedy is put”points out the president of ATA.

If we analyze the self-employed data offered by the EPA, we see how the fourth quarter of 2022 closes with a decrease of 34,700 self-employed, loss carried out by self-employed workers without dependent workers, who have decreased by 37,000 people in this period. The self-employed registered as family help fell by 10,700 people. On the contrary, there is a slight increase in the self-employed with dependent employees (+6,800 self-employed) and members of cooperatives (+6,100).

If we look at the behavior for the year as a whole, the EPA shows a drop of 111,200 self-employed, a loss that rises to 118,700 self-employed without dependent workers. Is about really worrying numbers.

“The data is a faithful reflection of the bad situation that the self-employed have experienced in 2022. They face 2023 with a very delicate situation, with production expenses that are in many cases above the income they are registering. That is why it is necessary to take measures that support the self-employed, the business fabric and not punish those who undertake, those who employ, those who generate employment and activity such as the self-employed”concludes the president of ATA, Lorenzo Amor.
