A digital twin of Galicia is being developed to facilitate the management and planning of the territory

Barely a month after learning about the development of a digital twin in Cantabria, the Agency for Technological Modernization of Galiciaof the Consellería de Facenda e Administración pública will be in charge of the development of a digital twin of Galiciawhich will aim to facilitate the intelligent management and planning of the territory.

This entity will be in charge of its creation with the collaboration of the Galician Agency for Rural Development, the Ministry of Rural Affairs; and the Instituto de Estudos do Territorio, of the Department of Environment and Territory of Galicia.

When ready, this digital twin will consist of a virtual recreation of Galicia on a cartographic basis, and both companies and official institutions will be able to use it in tests and simulations to improve the provision of services. Its main applications will be in the areas of agricultural activities, interurban mobility and rural infrastructure management. To generate it, Artificial Intelligence technologies will be used, in addition to real data taken from IoT sensors and various additional sources. Among them fixed cameras, drones and weather stations.

This digital twin, known as Xemelgo Digital of Galicia (XDG) It is one of the three initiatives promoted by the Xunta de Galicia that are considered emblematic digital transformation projects chosen by the Government of Spain. These 11 projects are part of the first phase of the Territorial Networks of Technological Specialization Program, Retech.

The communities of La Rioja, Extremadura, Navarra and Castilla La Mancha also participate in it. As for the XDG, it is developed within the framework of the Intelligent Territory Project, and also of the SIX, the Xeographic Information System of the Xunta de Galicia.

Among other things, the Xunta de Galicia will contribute various assets to the project. Among them are the Smart Villages; and the iCousas project, focused on the creation of a centralized Internet of Things network that covers 71% of the territory. Also several integrated actions in Civil UAVs for use by unmanned aircraft, and the configurable and modular model of energy community. In addition, the project will have a budget of 4 million euros.

In addition to the aforementioned uses, this digital twin aims to make better use of public resources and infrastructure to improve transport in terms of sustainability. For this, with the XDG historical data will be used and trend predictions will be made. On the other hand, it will also be used to create tools and techniques to optimize agricultural and livestock resources, as well as to facilitate data analysis and simulation to make more efficient operational decisions in infrastructure management in rural areas.

The digital twin will not be a closed system, but will be open and will be used to collaborate with other territories. It will offer several services to those who use it. Among them a scenario simulator, 2D and 3D visualization, 5D Visualization, a GIS viewer, an interactive street map and information on climate and meteorology.

To function and allow operations to be carried out with it, it will use different technologies: data intelligence, analytical services, machine learning and Artificial Intelligence algorithms. Too will have a data modeling layer and a data spacewhich will be a federated data lake of the Xunta.
