To fill the shelves during this time of shortage, Nvidia is resurrecting its 20X0 series yet again, this time with an all-new RTX 2050.
NVIDIA is definitely not ready to bury its 20X0 series, at least as long as the shortage continues. After its “new” RTX 2060 12GB, the green team will soon release a new anachronistic product: here is the RTX 2050, an entry-level graphics card for laptops that smacks of the year 2019 and reminds us of this sweet and long ago without coronavirus.
The good news is, it’s not just old recycled material to fill shelves in dire straits. Compared to its sisters in the series, 20X0, it has received a significant facelift; exit, the old Turing architecture, this model is entitled to the same Ampere architecture as the representatives of the 30X0 series. And this is not the only aspect to have been modernized. This card also has 2048 CUDA cores and 4GB of GDDR6, which places it very precisely at the level of the RTX 3050.
What to hope for very honest performances. However, they will not be quite at the level of the latter; the 3050 nevertheless benefits from a considerable advantage in terms of the memory bus. This reaches 128-bit, while the new 2050 will have to be content with 64-bit. In practice, however, this could represent a rather interesting compromise. This card should allow you to enjoy AAA games with quite decent performance without breaking the bank. As long as you make some concessions on image quality, at least.
A new series of graphics chips
Nvidia also announced the arrival of its new MX550 and MX570 graphics chips. Difficult to make predictions on these devices, because the NVIDIA press release does not contain any technical specifications. We have just learned that the MX570 will be “Featuring more power efficient CUDA cores and faster memory speeds than previous MX GPUs”.
The same goes for the MX550 which takes over from the MX450. Again, almost no technical details; Nvidia simply explains that its chip “offers a leap in performance and efficiency for photo and video editing tasks such as using Adobe Lightroom and Premiere Pro, and better games than integrated graphics cards. ” There is reason to be skeptical about this last statement, but we will have to wait to lay our hands on a new laptop equipped with this chip to judge!
