AMD Instinct MI210 outperforms AMD Instinct MI100 by 40%

The AMD Instinct MI210 is a graphics accelerator that uses the new CDNA 2 architecture, although with an important peculiarity, and that is that this model does not use a multichip configuration, which is the case with the AMD Instinct MI250 and AMD Instinct MI250X, which use two chips together to form a superchip.

This we just said implies, in summary, that the AMD Instinct MI210 is a graphics accelerator with a monolithic core design, and therefore it is not capable of reaching the other two in terms of raw power. However, that does not mean that it is not a high-performance model, and it is that, if we compare it with the AMD Instinct MI100, we see that there is an important difference in favor of the first, so much so that manages to exceed it by 40%.

On the other hand, this move by AMD confirms rumors that the company was going to combine, in its new generation of graphics solutions, a monolithic core design with a multi-chip type. This same approach should carry over, as is, to the general consumer sector, and also to its Radeon Pro series, aimed at professionals in the world of design, rendering and content creation.

Returning to the AMD Instinct MI210, this graphics accelerator has 104 compute units, which translates to a total of 6,656 shaders, it has 64 GB of HBM2E memory. This means that said graphics accelerator uses a shortened version of the Aldebaran chip that AMD has used in the AMD Instinct MI250 and MI250X, whose maximum configuration is 128 CUs, which is equivalent to a total of 8,192 shaders.

The AMD Instinct MI210 is, as we have said, up to 40% faster than the AMD Instinct MI100 in BabelStream with HIP. The rest of its specifications have not been confirmed yet, but everything seems to indicate that it will have a 4,096 bit bus, which would leave us with a bandwidth of up to 1.6 TB / s, and it is expected to reach a throughput of 44 TFLOPs in FP32, and of 176 TOPs in FP16. Your cooling system will work passively, and your TDP should be around 300 watts.

These AMD graphics solutions, based on the CDNA 2 architecture, will be the great rivals of the next generation of NVIDIA graphics accelerators based on Hopper, an architecture that, as we have told you in previous articles, it will also use a multi-chip module layout.
