Apple Wallet and DNI Wallet: are they compatible with each other?

iPhone with takeaways in Apple Wallet

A few days ago I was talking about the DNI Wallet application, the first app that allows us to carry the DNI on the iPhonebut, Apple Wallet and DNI Wallet, are they compatible with each other?. We are going to talk about the two apps and take a closer look at the panorama that awaits us.

Our personal documents in Apple Wallet

That should be the goal. That we can identify ourselves from any place or placeand we do not depend on physically going anywhere or waiting days for an appointment or waiting in long lines to obtain a document or carry out a procedure in the administration on duty.

Being able to carry out the most fundamental procedures and, increasingly, normal and sporadic procedureswhich depend on having to identify ourselves to finish the management that we are carrying out, or the signing of documents that we are contributing to a State entity or administration.

And that all these procedures can be done from any mobile device that we have with its limitations, of course, although they are fewer and fewer, but that is the only impediment, being perfectly identified through it.

When it comes to identifying ourselves, we can either do it with the Digital Certificate or with the electronic DNI. In another article we saw that it can be installed on our iPhone and that it serves as a gateway to certain organizations, although documents cannot yet be signed, that is, we can consult and obtain, but not sign to request or provide documentation.

The DNI, the key document

At the end of 2020, heThe National Police announced that it was developing an application to be able to carry the DNI on mobile devices. We don’t know for sure where that has been after three and a half years.

The DGT has its miDGT app where it is already possible to carry the Driving License “informally”. But not official.

Perhaps the pattern or the wait has to do with the digitization at a European level that is intended to be carried out. There are plans to create an electronic wallet at a European level in the direction in which My Citizen Folder is heading, the application that provides the most information on each citizen at the moment and that we liked the most. Try it.

Because when it comes to digitization, we are not exactly the first. There are fully digitized European countries where their citizens carry out their procedures and identify themselves from any device and there are even countries such as Estonia or Switzerland that even allow voting electronically.

France, the United Kingdom, Italy and the Netherlands have at least once tried it, but in Spain that is still science fiction.

for now, only the DNI Wallet appfrom the Spanish company Secureware, It is the only one that is capable of carrying our electronic IDwith all your data on our iPhone.

Through the NFC chip, it reads all the data necessary to have a reliable and secure electronic copy, which is stored on the iPhone with our biometric data.

Apple Wallet and DNI Wallet, are they compatible with each other?

Apple’s plans

Apple, with its methodical philosophy, has always tried to unify our documents in a single app. Apple Wallet was born with the intention that our credit cards and our movie reservations, hotels, plane tickets, etc., would be in the same place through Passbook, accessible at all times.

Now also try with hotel keys, house keys, car keys, Apple Wallet will transfer everything we carry in our pockets to the mobile.

And it also does it with official documents, such as ID, DNI or driver’s license, but if with other entities you have managed to set a standard or work with one that is already widely expanded to improve it, with the issue of official documentation, he has run into a huge wall, the bureaucracy.

bureaucracy worldwide

Already in the US, Apple, the company with the most economic power in the world, has to deal with the approval of each North American state to be able to validate the ID or driver’s license, in the rest of the world it would have to negotiate and deal with each government of each country. Because there is no single standard and each country has its own, with its different security protocols and verification systems.

So it wouldn’t hurt to Apple will rely, in some way, on third-party apps that will do the “dirty work” with each administration of each country and that could provide this service. Read the data and use it to verify our identity with all the guarantees and security required and then carry a digital copy of our ID in Apple Wallet.

This application from the Spanish company Secureware is available for download in the App Store, so its purpose is validated and it complies with the strict security standards that Apple requires for its applications.

There is still a fundamental step or procedure left, which is to be validated by the Spanish Administration so that it is valid to carry the DNI on a mobile device and operate with it as if it were a physical one.

But once that stumbling block can be cleared, we could dream of Apple Wallet and DNI Wallet being compatible with each other or depending on each other for certain functions.

Or that Apple ends up buying the app that is the standard in each country or is recognized by the administration on duty if it wants to continue in its efforts to make Wallet the Digital Wallet that we all think of.

Hence, Could Apple Wallet and DNI Wallet be compatible with each other? yes, no and it depends.

Towards unification, but someday

The users, what we want, and I include myself, is A place where you can carry “everything” . DNI, Passport, Driving License, Family Book, Digital Certificate, Bank Cards, Keys (house, car), Other services (metro, bus, loyalty cards, reservations), etc. Even the extinct COVID certificate.

A portfolio where you can unify them all and where you can see everything. But that, today seems impossible, because everyone wants to be the standard to follow and some apps may unify and unite, but they do it by sectors, interested in it.

And in terms of official documents, digitization, supports and user requirements move at a different speed than the administrations of different countries.

Each organization wants to implement its standard app with its specifications, when try to unify all the efforts and the entire budget in a single app for the citizenand that this, in some way, is based on the OS of the device so that the digital wallet carries the more information and services, the better.

Conclusion

Technology, which must be at the service of the human being, is already more than ready and prepared to give us what we want, but in this case it is the human being, the governments and the administrations, they are the ones that are not prepared to leave the physical for digital.

Will we ever see our Apple Wallet with everything we carry today? Let’s dream that it is so and that we can get to see it. There are technical means, proof of this is the DNI Wallet, what is missing now is the will.

There are already many services that have left their physical barriers and have been implemented in the digital worldidentification and bureaucracy, they should have made the leap a long time ago, since we are well into the 21st century, but they resist.
