The audio wants to follow us inside the vehicle
A patent, in which Apple appears as an applicant, is what has made this information known. «User Tracking Headrest Audio Control“, is the official name of the document, which translated literally means User Tracking Headrest Audio Control.
“Implementations of the technology in question provide user tracking headrest audio control. For example, a seat may have a headrest and one or more speakers mounted in the headrest to provide audio output to a seat occupant. Because the occupant’s head may be positioned close to the speaker, the nearest speakers are then heard when the occupant is in that seat,” the patent explains.
Therefore, it is very possible that audio tracking technology will end up reaching the future Apple Car. To do this, they want to play with the layout of the speakers, which will be placed at key points in the cabin. And how are the speakers going to know when we are “looking” at them? Thanks to sensors.
One of the sections of the document talks about “determining, based on a signal from at least one localized sensor, of at least a part of the occupant’s head that is in a seat in a closed environment.”
They don’t say “car”, but “closed environment”
This time it is Apple who has applied for the patent. They have not used third-party companies to hide their identity, as has happened on other occasions. But to the detriment of publishing its name, throughout the patent it is said that this system is going to be a “closed environment”. An environment that is a vehicle and everything that is developed in the document is aimed at the interior of a car. And in the line of the speakers, they continue to explain the dynamics of the system’s operation:
“A first speaker that is mounted on the headrest of a seat in a closed environment, to output audio in a first location”, and “a second speaker that is mounted within the space at a location away from the seat, to output audio in a second time, which is delayed in relation to the first time.
In other words, by having several speakers in the same interior, if we want the audio to follow us, the sensors will communicate with each other, delaying the audio signal so that the signal is compensated, every time we move or we turn our heads
Although it is a patent, the truth is that there is still a lot to know about how this system will finally work. The sound-tracking technology we already have in products like the AirPods Pro could eventually evolve and grow so large that it has the potential to fill an entire car.
