Chrome 113 lays the foundation for the evolution of graphics in browsers

Google has announced the launch of Chrome 113, a new version of your web browser with which, in turn, the monthly ban is opened as far as updates are concerned. That is to say, this is only the first of the Chromium-based browsers to present its update and, following the usual rule, everything seems to indicate that it will be one of the dullest in terms of news, with exceptions.

With exceptions, because although Chrome is not one of the boldest browsers when it comes to introducing new features, deep down it is the pioneer of “the Chromium tribe”, as is also demonstrated on this occasion, applying to itself the brand new cutting-edge technologies that will later be assumed by the rest of the derivatives. The same goes for the fixes and optimizations implemented in Chromium.

Thus, Chrome 113 releases the new WebGPU API enabled by default, one that, as its name indicates, revolves around the browser graphical support. Specifically, WebGPU allows web applications and games to make better use of the graphics hardware of devices. Even more specifically, WebGPU will be the mainstay on which to support the improvement of graphic support on the Web and, by extension, in all web browsers, Firefox included, since it is a W3C standard specification.

However, this first implementation still has work ahead of it and Google continues to develop different components in this regard, such as WebCodecs or others, which still have a long way to go before reaching the browser. In summary, Chrome is preparing for a deep renovation in terms of 3D graphics capabilities and performance concern and the first loser of the change is WebGPU, the new generation replacement for the old WebGL.

Beyond this basic change that nobody is going to notice for now, Chrome 113 incorporates other things, although it is also about internal innovations that attract little attention, but are important for what they mean: improved performance CPU coding with AV1, improvements to CSS element support, and, as always, a few security patches that will feed the entire Chromium family of browsers.

In total, Chrome 113 introduces 9 features and 15 fixes, speaking solely for the version of the browser for PC (Linux, Mac, Windows).s
