GTA 6 might have the best character animations in video game history

A Reddit user spotted a patent filed by Take-Two that describes how video game characters are animated. To achieve an unprecedented level of realism, the developers use “blocks” which allow the character to react intelligently to each situation. It is possible that GTA 6 will use this technique.

After the “missed” announcement of GTA 6 a few weeks ago, players are more than ever looking for information about the game. It must be said that Rockstar, as usual, is keeping the title a secret very well guarded, despite some setbacks with the LAPSUS $ pirates. However, we know that Take-Two, the studio’s parent company, already plans to reach $1 billion in revenue in the first week of launch.

The publisher is therefore probably expecting a game, if not revolutionary, at least convincing enough to sell it by the pallet. However, a recent discovery by an Internet user on Reddit is already making people salivate. The latter indicates having discovered a patent written by a certain Tobias Kleanthous, a developer who worked at Rockstar from 2014 to 2021, in charge of character animation and AI.

GTA 6 might have the most realistic animations in the industry

His patent, simply titled “System and method of locomotion of virtual characters”, describes a new way of animating characters in a video game. Tobbelobben30, the Internet user who found the document, describes the technology as “building blocks”, which can be combined with each other to create a wide variety of animations.

“For example, imagine a character walking in the rain, feeling tired or injured. Instead of designing separate animations for each of these situations, they use these building blocks to put the character’s movements together in a natural way.”, explains Tobbelobben30. In this way, Rockstar could allow its NPCs to adapt to each situation in a realistic way, thus increasing the player’s immersion.

Of course, nothing says that this technology will be used in GTA 6. Like any company, Rockstar publishes patents which will not necessarily be applied immediately. That being said, Red Dead Redemption 2, the studio’s previous title, had already made a splash in the industry for the realism of its animations pushed to the extreme. It is not impossible that GTA 6 continues on this path.
