ChatGPT has revolutionized many people’s lives since its launch late last year, and all eyes are already on the conversational tool’s next releases, which will be powered by new, even better AIs.
When ChatGPT was released last year, the chatbot ran on the GPT-3 language model. As impressive as it is, the latter was quickly updated to a more powerful version 3.5, before Open AI, the company behind ChatGPT, finally launched GPT-4, its new AI that has become multimodal.
In addition to being much more efficient and intelligent than the previous version, the model can now include images in addition to text, which increases the possibilities of use tenfold. However, this version is currently only available through the paid ChatGPT Plus subscription, as well as Microsoft’s Bing Chat. Anyway, GPT-4 shouldn’t be the most powerful language model of the year, sincea new GPT-5 version would arrive at the end of the year, according to several leaks.
GPT-5 would arrive at the end of 2023
According to Siqi Chen, CEO of a16z-funded startup Runway and an AI investor, GPT-4 should be replaced by a new version GPT-5 from the end of 2023. However, as with GPT-4, the new model may initially only be available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, before eventually rolling out to all users.
ChatGPT could be as smart as a human

Thanks to it, ChatGPT would thus be able to model abstract ideas, to experience “real” feelings or even to reason as a human being might.
GPT-5 could solve a lot of problems, but also pose new ones
So Chen’s assertion is quite explosive, considering all the possibilities that AGI could offer. On the positive side, it could massively increase the productivity of various AI-based processes, speeding up human tasks and eliminating monotonous drudgery and tedious work.
Elon Musk, for example, wants to combine artificial intelligence and his autonomous robot Optimus to replace certain workers in difficult jobs. For this, the billionaire would also work on his close AI, but we do not know much about him for the moment. We also recall that Elon Musk himself co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but he has not been part of the project for a few years now.
However, endowing an AI with such power could have unintended consequences, which we just haven’t thought of yet. We are still far from the disasters seen in science fiction films, but achieving strong artificial intelligence could raise many major questions about AI. Either way, it’s not yet known whether GPT-5 will actually reach the AGI, and Chen later clarified that his original tweet was not representative of a consensus within OpenAI.
