According to Lebensmittel Zeitung, Lidl, the German distribution brand founded in 1930 known for its aggressive prices, has confirmed to the German newspaper Lebensmittel Zeitung that it intends to launch an online sales site dedicated to French customers. This is not a first for the Teutonic hard-discounter, since it already offers this service in Belgium and Poland.

The French, in addition to being able to do their shopping online, will therefore be able to have their order delivered to their home. An app should accompany the launch of the site to encourage customers to make a purchase even more quickly. The most disillusioned Internet users will note that it is high time for Lidl to follow suit with competing brands. That said, as Michel Biero, Executive Purchasing Director, points out, the company will focus on non-food products.

German supermarkets are indeed very popular for their DIY tools and gardening, their household appliances or their decorative objects at low prices. A selection of products that will allow managers to test the waters in France and see how this large-scale initiative can be followed up. If the company has announced that it will formalize the terms of this new service on May 23the brand’s most frequent customers (and those in a hurry) will have noticed that the online ordering service is already open.

Will Lidl be able to compete with Amazon in e-commerce? Nothing is less certain, as the Seattle giant dominates this sector head and shoulders. The German brand can count on the fact thatAmazon has a bad reputation in France, which results in disappointing sales, despite the tens of thousands of jobs created in France. The opportunity to steal market share from the behemoth is therefore very real.
