More than 50 cars have been stolen thanks to a tablet, as in Watch Dogs!

Are thieves in the future? The question arises in view of this strange case involving three young people from Lille. On a surveillance camera video, we see them using a tablet as if to capture waves, before stealing a Peugeot. A total of fifty vehicles were stolen.

New technologies don’t just make our lives easier. They also make it easier for thieves. At the end of 2021, AirTags allowed malicious individuals to track their targets and steal at least five luxury cars. Vehicles also seem to be particularly targeted by the latter. In Lille, a strange scene was filmed by a surveillance camera. On this one, we see two young men with a tablet. A few seconds later, they fled at the wheel of the Peugeot parked on the side.

Have the thieves come up with the same device that allows Watch Dogs hackers to hack anything it finds? That’s what the video seems to say. One of the individuals does appear to be “scanning” a door, as if trying to pick up the waves from the vehicle key. Above all, after some time, he makes a sign to his acolyte which seems to mean that the operation is a success. However, facing the court, the perpetrators of the crime refuse to reveal their scheme.

Did the thieves use a pirate tablet?

Three men, aged 21 to 23, end up arrested by the Lille police. According to the latter, they would have taken over fifty cars. The lawyer for one of the victims says that his “customer lost a car bought for €35,000 in 2017 and still listed for €22,000 today”. For its part, the defense argues the absurdity of the accusation. “My client did not complete his bodywork CAP because he found it too hard”, explains in particular Me Laurent.

Yet, although they don’t seem to have the “build” to develop such an operation, it was the Audi A3 of one of the defendants that enabled the police to find their trace. Judgment will be rendered by February 9. Two of them will be sent to jail, while the third will be placed under judicial control. The cars would have been transferred to Belgium and Germany.
